2001-02 SEASON IN REVIEW
The Clarkson University Women's Basketball team will have a lot to build on next season, as the Golden Knights, guided by fifth-year head coach Laura Habacker, saw strong performances during the 2001-02 campaign that helped them to a 10-15 overall record.
Leading the way for Clarkson this season was junior Linda Bondellio (Watertown, NY), a WBCA/Kodak DIII All-American Honorable Mention selection, the first for the program in years. Setting a new record for points per game this season at Clarkson, Bondellio averaged 17.2 points per game to lead the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA). Bondellio's 10.2 rebounds per game was also a UCAA best, and her overall performance this season earned her UCAA All-Conference Second Team honors, along with garnering the UCAA Player of the Week honor on three separate occasions, and two ECAC Upstate NY weekly awards. Just as impressive as her on-court performance, Bondellio succeeded in the classroom to earn UCAA Winter All-Academic honors.
Classmate Jen Martin (Guildhall, VT) finished second for Clarkson this season in points and rebounds, averaging 12.2 points and 9.6 rebounds through 25 games. Martin led the team from the floor in shooting percentage, knocking down 43% of her attempts (116-269), and her 75.5% free-throw shooting (74-98) was among the leaders in the league. Martin set a new game record for rebounds this season, pulling down 20 boards against Potsdam at home. A UCAA All-Conference Honorable Mention for 2001-02, Martin also earned Colby-Sawyer Tip Off Classic All-Tournament Team honors for her performance at the beginning of the season.
Rounding out the junior class are Laura Blaauboer (Ballston Spa, NY) and Holly Helmling (Vincennes, IN). Through 25 games, Blaauboer averaged 9.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game with 39 assists, while Helmling scored 3.5 points per contest and grabbed 2.4 boards, along with 30 assists through 25 games. Both players were named as members of the UCAA Winter All-Academic team.
Sophomores Bridgett Sweeney (Corning, NY) and Brittany Speck (Lake George, NY) will look to take on more of a leading role next season. Sweeney finished the season averaging 5.7 points, and was second on the team in three-point baskets with 29 through 25 games played. Speck scored 4.1 points per contest, and averaged 2.6 rebounds per game in the 25 games she appeared in.
The freshman class had an impressive year, and will only look to improve next season. Point guard Linda Fernandez (Kennebunkport, ME) led the way this season for the freshman four, averaging 5.0 points per game and leading the team in assists, dishing the ball a total of 92 times. Amanda O'Neil (Norwood, NY) scored 1.7 points per game and grabbed 1.2 rebounds per game through 22 contests, while Ashley Janisewski (Chateaugay, NY) averaged 1.0 points and 1.4 rebounds through 20 games. Jamie Folsom (Alexandria Bay, NY) will look to improve her role next season after playing in seven games for the Golden Knights this year.
Clarkson had a rough start to the season when it traveled to New Hampshire for the Colby-Sawyer Classic. On November 16, the Golden Knights fell to the University of New England, 59-47, and then the next night fell to host Colby-Sawyer 83-62.
The first home game of the season saw the first win for Clarkson, as a last second three-point basket by Bondellio lifted the Golden Knights over Plattsburgh 67-65 on November 20. The Knights came out of the holiday break to travel to St. Lawrence for their first UCAA matchup of the season on November 27. The outing turned out tough for Clarkson, as the Saints defeated the Golden Knights 69-30.
The end of November saw the Knights return to the Alumni Gym to face Cazenovia and Keuka. Proving that home is their favorite place to play, the Green and Gold handily defeated the Wildcats 69-47 on Friday, November 30, and then on Saturday battled past the Storm 68-50.
Entering a four-game road-trip at the end of the academic semester, Clarkson traveled to Rochester, NY, to face national powerhouse St. John Fisher on December 8. The road woes for the Knights continued, as the Cardinals downed Clarkson 79-64.
The New Year saw the Golden Knights travel to New York City to face off against Lehman and Manhattanville. Although Clarkson was unable to overcome Lehman 82-77, the Golden Knights did pick up their first victory on the road when they defeated Manhattanville 69-53 on Saturday, January 5. Clarkson finished off its four-game road trip at Utica College on January 8 with a narrow 66-64 loss.
Returning home for the first time in the New Year, Clarkson started the bulk of league play when it hosted UCAA foes Union and Skidmore on January 11 and 12. The Dutchwomen had the advantage over the Green and Gold on Friday 65-50, but the Golden Knights bounced back in style on Saturday afternoon to beat the Thoroughbreds 84-73.
Hosting cross-town rival Potsdam on Tuesday, January 15, Clarkson looked to build on the momentum from the past weekend with a win. The Golden Knights got what they wanted, with Martin leading the way with 25 points and a game-record 20 rebounds in the 84-73 win.
Clarkson hoped to put a string of wins together when it went on a four-game road trip to UCAA opponents Rensselaer, Vassar, Hamilton, and William Smith. Unfortunately for the Golden Knights, the Red Hawks handed them a 56-48 loss on January 18. Clarkson rebounded the next night against the Brewers with a 61-50 win, but the Green and Gold dropped the next two games of the road trip, losing to the Continentals 70-57 on January 25 and the Herons 69-43 on January 26.
After facing Vassar and Rensselaer only two weeks prior, Clarkson returned to the Alumni Gym on February 2 and 3 to face the Brewers and Red Hawks once again. The Golden Knights picked up a season sweep of the Brewers with a 58-45 win Saturday night, however the Green and Gold could not complete the weekend sweep, dropping the Sunday matinee game 76-56 to the Red Hawks.
February 5 saw UCAA and North Country rival St. Lawrence enter the Alumni Gym for the second meeting of the season between the two teams. It was a bittersweet game for Clarkson, as Bondellio scored her 1,000-career point but the eventual NCAA Tournament Finalist Saints won 74-50.
The Golden Knights completed a season sweep of Skidmore when it traveled to Saratoga Springs, NY, on February 8 for a 64-53 win over the Thoroughbreds. Saturday was a different story for Clarkson, as Union upended the Green and Gold 66-51. Clarkson completed its road trip on Tuesday, February 12, against Middlebury with a 65-50 loss.
Finishing off the regular season at home, the Golden Knights hosted UCAA foes William Smith and Hamilton. Although Clarkson lost the first night 63-52 to the Herons, the Golden Knights were able to snap a three-game losing streak and finish the season with a win over the Continentals 65-55.

KNIGHTS RETURN HOME FOR THREE-GAME STRETCH AT ALUMNI GYM
Clarkson Enters Weekend Facing UCAA Foes Union, Skidmore
The road has not been kind to the Golden Knights, and a return to the Alumni Gym is a welcome sight for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team. Clarkson will look to improve upon its 3-0 record at home this weekend when Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association foes Union and Skidmore come to town.
"We prepared our non-conference schedule so that we would be ready to play these teams," commented head coach Laura Habacker on the upcoming UCAA contests. "I think our non-conference schedule is tougher than most of the other teams in our conference, and its going to prepare us for Union, Skidmore, and RPI."
Junior Linda Bondellio (Watertown, NY) leads the Knights this season in both points per game and rebounds. Showing her dominance in the paint, The former UCAA Rookie of the Year Bondellio leads the team and the league in rebounds with 11.1 per game, while her 16.6 points per game puts her first on the team in scoring and third in the UCAA. Bondellio received UCAA Forward/Center of the week for the week of December 4.
"Her scoring and rebounding has helped us greatly," remarked Habacker on Bondellio's performance to date. "What she's starting to do now though is passing the ball to our guards and to Jen Martin. Bondellio and Martin are starting to play well together."
Close behind Bondellio is classmate Jen Martin (Guildhall, VT). Martin is second on the team and in the UCAA in rebounding, pulling down an average 9.6 boards per game. Averaging 12.5 points per game, Martin is also second in scoring for the Golden Knights and ninth in the league. Martin also received All-Tournament Team honors at the Colby-Sawyer Tip-Off Classic.

Classmate Brittany Speck (Lake George, NY) has made appearances in all ten games, picking up 5.4 points per game, while averaging 16.0 minutes of playing time.
