2000-01 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL WRAP-UP
Though the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team did not enjoy the same sort of team success as they did last season, the Golden Knights reached some of the highest achievements in the program’s recent history. After starting off the season with a 4-3 record, the Knights struggled in the middle of the season winning just once in the next 14 contests. However, something finally clicked at the end of the season for Clarkson, has they enjoyed three impressive wins to end the regular season.

The Golden Knights defeated Middlebury College 66-61 to end a 10-game losing streak and then continued to surprise with a win over national power and Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA)-foe William Smith, 62-55. The Knights ended the regular season’s final week with a win over UCAA opponent Hamilton, 68-66. Clarkson’s hot streak ended with a 64-51 loss to eventual champion Rensselaer in the opening round of the UCAA tournament, ending the season with an 8-17 overall record and a 3-11 mark in the UCAA.

While the Knights showed glimpses of what could be coming in the 2001-02 season, several players also showed that they might be on their way to some of the greatest careers in Clarkson history.

Sophomore Linda Bondellio (Watertown, NY) was among the UCAA leaders in points and rebounds all season long, finishing first in scoring with at 16.3 points per game, just .18 points short of the highest single-season average in Clarkson history. Bondellio also placed third in rebounds at 8.7 per contest in the UCAA. Besides per game averages, Bondellio also made an impressive impact on the Clarkson record book. Bondellio finished the season with the most points by a sophomore (407) and the most free throws made in a season (99). Her 32 points on February 9th against Union broke the 13-year old school mark for points in a game. Bondellio was twice named the UCAA Forward of the Week for the Golden Knights and was named ECAC Player of the Week the final week of the regular season. Bondellio was also selected as a UCAA First-Team All-Star, the first Clarkson player so honored since 1997.

Junior center Heather Dority (Lisbon, NY) continued to make her own assault on the Clarkson record book as well, becoming just the 10th player in Clarkson history to score 800 career points, doing so in just 69 games, the third-fastest player to reach that level. She also became just the eighth player to reach 500 career rebounds. Only Clarkson all-time rebounding leader reached that total in fewer games than Dority. The junior center averaged 11.0 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season and was named UCAA Honorable Mention.

Senior guard Patty McTigue (Shelton, CT) also reached the 800-point plateau and became the third leading-rebounder in Clarkson history. Her averages of 7.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game were among the team leaders and she ranked first in assists for the Golden Knights.

Helping McTigue in the backcourt were sophomore guards Holly Helmling (Vincennes, IN) and Laura Blaauboer (Ballston Spa, HY). Both averaged over six points per game for the Golden Knights. Freshman guard Bridget Sweeney (Corning, NY) started 17 games for the Golden Knights, helping solidify the Knights backcourt. Erica Decker (Burnt Hills, NY) and Tammy Aldous (Colton, NY) also played limited roles for the Knights while battling physical problems. Helping anchor the front court with Bondellio and Dority was sophomore Jen Martin (Guildhall, VT). Martin averaged 7.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game for Clarkson. Freshmen Christin Reynolds (Katonah, NY) and Brittany Speck (Lake George, NY) also played key roles for the Knights. Reynolds led the team with 22 blocked shots in limited action.

CURRENT KNIGHTS SETTING ALL-TIME STANDARDS

While it may only be mid-season, several players on the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team are making some giants leaps in the Golden Knights’ record book. Senior guard Patty McTigue, junior center Heather Dority, and sophomore forward Linda Bondellio are all enjoying excellent seasons that rank them with the best of the best at Clarkson.

McTigue, a 5-9 guard from Shelton, CT, has quietly entered the top five all-time in rebounding at Clarkson and could potentially end up in the top 10 all-time in scoring as well. McTigue’s 582 rebounds place her just 32 behind Brigitte Aldous ’90 and 39 behind Kim Brown ’94. At her current pace, she should end up passing both players to rank third all-time. With a scoring burst in the final games of the season, she could also surpass 800 points and reach the top 10 scoring list at Clarkson.

Heather Dority, a 6-0 center from Lisbon, NY, is steadily surpassing standards that could rank her as one of the greatest players ever at Clarkson. Dority is tied for 10th all-time in scoring in just 65 games played and owns the third-highest scoring average in Clarkson Women’s Basketball history at 11.8 points per game. Dority also ranks eighth all-time in rebounding is just 19 boards short of 500. Her 7.4 rebounds per game is also the third best career average in Knights’ history.

While McTigue and Dority are creating space at the top of the all-time lists with their play, sophomore Linda Bondellio, a 6-0 forward from Watertown, NY, is just now making her way on to the all-time lists at Clarkson. If she continues to play at her current rate, she too could rank high on Clarkson’s lists. Averaging 14.7 points per game, tops in the UCAA this year, Bondellio has already surpassed 500 career points in just 40 games and ranks 21st on the all-time Clarkson scoring list with 513 points. She is well within Melissa Smith’s ’90 sophomore scoring record of 376 points, having tallied 235 points already this season.

CLARKSON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW
After starting last season with an 0-5 record, the Clarkson University Women’s Basketball team won 12 of their remaining 20 games and look to use that momentum to start this season. Guided by fourth-year coach Laura Habacker and assistant Ann Parks, the Golden Knights look to gain their first post-season tournament appearance since the 1994-95 season after posting a 12-13 overall record last year.

While the Golden Knights lost several key seniors from last season’s team, they do return their top two scorers and rebounders in junior Heather Dority (Lisbon, NY) and sophomore Linda Bondellio (Watertown, NY). Dority, who was named an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) second-team all-star for the second straight year, ranked fourth in the UCAA in scoring (12.2 ppg) and first in rebounding (8.2 rpg). Bondellio, who was named the UCAA Rookie of the Year, averaged over 11 points per game came with 19 points of Clarkson’s freshman scoring record while averaging just under seven rebounds per contest. With the two players returning this season, the Golden Knights should continue to be dominant in the paint.

Also returning in the frontcourt is sophomore Jen Martin (Guildhall, VT), who led the team in steals and ranked second in blocked shots. Martin is a very versatile player who can play both down on the blocks and also out on the wing at the guard position.

Returning in the backcourt are senior Patty McTigue (Shelton, CT), junior Tammy Aldous (Colton, NY), and sophomores Holly Helmling (Vincennes, IN) and Laura Blaauboer (Ballston Spa, NY). McTigue, a three-year starter, averaged over six points and six rebounds per game last season and currently ranks 15th all-time in scoring and 8th all-time in rebounding at Clarkson. With another excellent season, McTigue could move into the top 10 all-time in scoring and reach the third spot at Clarkson in rebounding. Aldous is the team’s leading 3-point threat, taking all but 14 of her shots last season from beyond the 3-point arc. Helmling played in all 25 games last season for the Knights and averaged just under three points per game off the bench. Blaauboer played in 15 games and saw her playing time increased at the end of the season.

Several newcomers will add to the depth of the Golden Knights bench. Freshman frontcourt players Christin Reynolds (Katonah, NY) and Brittany Speck (Lake George, NY), as well as sophomore Karen Merkel (Rochester, NY), should provide rest time for Dority and Bondellio during the season. Adding to the backcourt depth are freshman Bridget Sweeney (Corning, NY) and Erica Decker (Burnt Hills, NY).
