2002 SEASON WRAP UP
It is doubtful that in his 13-year tenure with the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team that head coach Willi Steinrotter has suffered through worse luck. The Golden Knights struggled to finish with a 2-12 overall record, but very easily could have reversed their record with just the slightest amount of good fortune. Clarkson owned just a 2-7 record in games decided by a single goal, including losses to top regional teams St. Lawrence (1-0), Cortland State (2-1) and Plattsburgh State (2-1). Along with their close losses, the Knights were also unable to pull out two victories in which they scored three goals. All in all, the line between tremendous success and utter disappointment was quite slim for the 2002 Golden Knights.
Senior co-captain Jonathan Banz (Dix Hills, NY) led the Golden Knights with seven goals and 17 points. Banz finished his career with 17 goals and 50 points, ranking him 12th on the all-time list at Clarkson and was selected a UCAA First-Team All-Star. Senior co-captain Tedd Jagusztyn (Sao Paulo, Brazil) also enjoyed an excellent senior year with six goals and three assists, totaling 15 points. Senior striker Mike Bud (Canandaigua, NY) scored four times in 2002 for the Golden Knights and ended his senior season with 18 career goals and 44 career points, good enough for 15th all-time at Clarkson. Senior striker Collin Fingon (Rutland, VT) was the Knights' fourth-leading scorer with four assists.
While the senior class accounted for 17 of the team's 21 goals this season, the Golden Knights enjoyed contributions from the three other classes. Sophomores Carson Morey (Loweland, OH) and Brian Greene (Latham, NY) each scored goals while junior Ken Rushing (Paw Paw, MI) and freshman Dan Fitzpatrick (Oneonta, NY) also contributed one goal each this season.
The Golden Knights split time in net with two goaltenders, senior Zach Ogden (Duxbury, MA) and Mike Frediani (Morris Plains, NY). The two netminders combined for a .724 save percentage and 97 saves in 14 games.
Contributing to the Knights' offense were juniors Mark Bahr (Rome, NY) and Josh Edlinger (Margaretville, NY) as well as freshman Chris Mott (Clifton Park, NY). Other active midfielders for the Knights included senior Matt Fox (Edwards, NY), juniors Christophe Vaugeois (Washington, DC) and Asun Sathyanathan (West Babylon, NY), sophomores Brandon Daniels (Fairport, NY) and John Stukavec (Johnson City, NY), as well as freshman Jason Pickhardt (Orchard Park, NY), who competed in 12 of the team's 14 games.
Earning experience on defense were junior Brad McQueary (New Hartford, NY), sophomores Dan Fellegara (Fairport, NY) and Jason Mayerhofer (West Babylon, NY) and freshmen Steve Finley (Owego, NY), Tim Allen (Brewerton, NY) and Ryan Stephens (Endwell, NY).

Banz was also the team leader in shots (39) and shots on goal (24) and scored two goals on three penalty kick attempts. Banz excelled in UCAA competition as well, leading the team with two goals, two assists, and six total points.

CARDINALS RECOVER FOR 2-1 WIN OVER GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Jason Sousa scored his third goal of the season with just six minutes remaining in the second half as Plattsburgh State completed a 2-1 comeback win over the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.
Clarkson opened the scoring early in the first half when senior co-captain Jonathan Banz (Dix Hills, NY) scored his seventh goal of the season on a rebound off goaltender Jeff Adams. The goal came at the 9:13 mark and senior co-captain Tedd Jagusztyn (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was awarded the assist.
The Cardinals, who improved to 14-4 on the season, came back to tie the score 1-1 when freshman Mike Figliola scored his team-high 14th goal of the season at the 67:22 mark. Sousa shot a crossing pass to Figliola at the 6-yard line and the freshman completed the play to tie the game.

MOREY'S OT GOAL ENDS KNIGHTS SKID
Enduring a losing streak of seven games is difficult enough, but to lose five straight games by a single goal makes it even more difficult. The Clarkson University Men's Soccer team was finally able to end a rough stretch of luck when Carson Morey (Loweland, OH) scored on a 30-yard shot with 1:41 left in the second overtime to lift the Golden Knights to a 3-2 victory over Skidmore in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) game Saturday afternoon at Clarkson Field.
Jonathan Banz (Dix Hills, NY) started the scoring for Clarkson in the first half when he took a shot from the 18-yard box at the 21:40 mark, recording his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Tedd Jagusztyn (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was credited with his second assist of the season. Skidmore's Will Mudge scored 12 minutes later on a penalty kick, his fourth goal of the year.
The Golden Knights came back to take the lead 2-1 in the second half when sophomore Brian Greene (Latham, NY) scored his first goal of the season on a direct kick from Christophe Vaugeois (Washington, DC) at the 68:21 mark in the second half. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Thoroughbreds' Andrew Souza scored his fifth goal of the season just 37 seconds later.
Zach Ogden (Duxbury, MA) made seven saves for Clarkson while Rollie Kielman made eight stops for Skidmore. Morey's game-winner was his first goal of the season.
The Golden Knights close out the regular season with a non-league game against Plattsburgh next Saturday in Potsdam.

LATE GOAL LEADS UNION PAST CLARKSON 2-1
Kevin Dolan scored with only 30 seconds remaining in the second half
as the Union Dutchmen defeated the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team 2-1 in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) game Friday afternoon at Clarkson Field.
Dolan's goal came on a crossing pass from Graham Lombardo in the final minute when the Dutchmen (8-5-2, 3-1-1 UCAA) were finally able to take advantage of the second half's wide-open style of play.
Kelvin Martinez scored the game's opening goal at the 43:42 mark in the first half when he beat a Clarkson defender and rolled his shot just past the outstretched hands of Clarkson goalie Mike Frediani (Morris Plains, NY). Lombardo was credited with the assist.
The Golden Knights dominated play in the second half, outshooting Union 10-5, but were able to take advantage of just one of those shots. Mike Bud (Canandaigua, NY) tied the game 1-1 at the 52:07 mark when he scored on a rebound off Dutchmen goaltender Kevin O'Connor. Clarkson enjoyed several excellent scoring opportunities in the final 30 minutes, but could not get the ball past O'Connor, who made 11 saves, seven of which came in the second half. Frediani made five saves for Clarkson.
The Golden Knights close out the UCAA regular season Saturday afternoon when they host Skidmore.

ST. LAWRENCE ESCAPES CLARKSON AGAIN, 1-0
No matter what the records of the two teams may be, St. Lawrence and the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team always play tight games. Saturday afternoon's Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) match up was no different as the Golden Knights fell to sixth-ranked St. Lawrence 1-0, falling to the Saints by a single goal for the sixth straight time.Despite holding an advantage in shots (14-5) and cornerkicks (12-3), St. Lawrence struggled to put any goals on the board against the Golden Knights until early in the second half when sophomore striker Evan Schutt kicked a crossing pass into the goalie box that happened to be on net, evading the outreached arms of Clarkson netminder Mike Frediani. The ball trickled through Frediani's hands and ended up in the far corner of the net for the game's only goal.
Of the last five contests between St. Lawrence and Clarkson, four of the games have finished with a score of 1-0, two ending in overtime.
The Golden Knights return to action next Friday with a UCAA game against Rensselaer at Troy, NY.

Rochester outshot the Golden Knights 11-2 and was awarded 10 cornerkicks to just three for Clarkson. DARGOUT'S CAREER DAY COMES AT KNIGHTS EXPENSE
The Clarkson University Men's Soccer team could have picked up their first victory of the season had it not been for the record-breaking performance of Nazareth striker Jefferson Dargout. The Golden Knights started on the right track when senior co-captain Jonathan Banz (Dix Hills, NY) scored his first goal of the season on a penalty kick. However, by the end of the first half, the Knights were down 3-1, thanks to two goals from Dargout.

Despite dominating the second half with a 12-2 shot advantage, the Clarkson Men's Soccer team couldn't come back from a 4-1 first half deficit, falling to Elmira 5-3 in the 2002 season opener at Elmira.
Without many opportunities, the Soaring Eagles of Elmira needed to take advantage of each of their scoring chances, which they did scoring on five of their seven shots in the game.
