2001 MEN'S SOCCER NEWS

2001 SEASON IN REVIEW
The Golden Knights look for 2002 to be a strong season for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team, after a promising 2001 campaign that saw the Green and Gold go 10-5-1 and win four out of their last six games.

Leading the way for the Golden Knights was junior Mike Bud (Canandaigua, NY), as Bud led the team in goals with eight tallies on the season, finishing with 21 points overall. Bud was also honored as a member of the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) All-Conference Second Team.

A member of the UCAA All-Conference First Team, junior Jonathan Banz (Dix Hills, NY) started all 16 games for the Knights, and finished second on the team in scoring with five goals and seven assists for 17 points overall. Banz picked up two goals and an assist in the 6-0 win over Elmira on September 22. Banz was also a NCAA Division III All-Northeast Regional First Team member.

One of the brightest spots from the freshman class this season was Carson Morey (Loveland, OH). Morey received the UCAA Rookie of the Year award for his outstanding performance for the Golden Knights, as he scored five goals and six assists through 15 games. Morey was hot near the end of the season, going on a five-game point scoring streak that saw the rookie tally four goals and pick up four assists, including a three-assist game against UCAA foe Hobart.

Although starting only one game for Clarkson, junior Tedd Jagusztyn (San Paulo, Brazil) saw action in all 16 of the Golden Knight's contests and finished fourth on the team in scoring with seven goals and one assist for a total of 15 points. Probably the biggest goal for Jagusztyn this season came in the first game of the year against crosstown foe Potsdam when he scored the game's only tally.

Defense was the name of the game for goaltenders Zach Ogden (Duxbury, MA) and Chris Stock (Penfield, NY), as the two netminders teamed up for eight shutouts on the season. Seeing action in all 16 games, Ogden made 53 saves and allowed 10 goals for a goals against average of 1.25, while Stock made 61 saves and allowed 7 goals to finish with a 0.81 goals against average. Both keepers were named as UCAA Co-Defenders of the Week on October 22, and Stock was named as UCAA Rookie of the Week for October 1.

Starting every game in his four years as a Golden Knight, senior Matt Secko (Shoreham, NY) provided solid defense for Clarkson this season. Secko had two tallies and four assists for the year, and was honored as a member of the NCAA Division III All-Northeast Regional Second Team.

Providing solid offensive production for Clarkson this season, junior forward Collin Fingon (Rutland, VT) produced three goals and added seven assists, while senior midfileder Chris Werely (Hamburg, NY) picked up three goals and an assist, along with earning UCAA Fall Academic Team honors. Junior Matt Fox (Edwards, NY) scored the first goal of his Clarkson career this season against RIT on October 19.

Coming off the bench at critical times for the Knights were junior Brett Dorey (Rochester, NY) and senior Chon Y. Kim (Utica, NY). Dorey, a UCAA Fall Academic Team member, scored two goals on the season, including the lone Clarkson goal in the tie in his hometown against the University of Rochester. Kim picked up the assist on the critical goal against Potsdam.

The Knights saw strong defensive play from their backs this season, as senior Ed Valenta (Whitney Point, NY), sophomore Ken Rushing (Paw Paw, MI), and freshman Jason Mayerhofer (West Babylon, NY) each made significant contributions. Valenta recorded two assists through 15 starts for Clarkson, while Rushing had one assist, along with making two big stops in front of the net this season. In his rookie season, Mayerhofer started 12 of the 13 games he played in.

Finishing off his senior season, Matt Thomas (North Rose, NY) appeared in eight games for Clarkson, picking up one assist in the Knights' win over Elmira. Looking to improve their playing time next season will be junior Matt Dubiel (Saquoit, NY), who started four games and played in seven.

Also looking to have a strong 2002 season will be junior Mosie Phirie (Botswana, Africa), sophomores Brad McQueary (New Hartford, NY) and Christophe Vaugeois (Washington, DC), and freshmen Brandon Daniels (Fairport, NY), Dan Fellegara (Fairport, NY), and Stephen Stallone (New Hyde Park, NY).

The Golden Knights started off the season with two one-goal wins, the first coming across the Racquette River against Potsdam State, with Jagusztyn picking up the game's lone goal on September 1 for a 1-0 Knight win. Clarkson then hosted LeMoyne College on September 5, and Bud's goal at 18:06 was the difference in the tough defensive battle.

The road trip to the capital region of New York was not as enjoyable as the Knights wanted, as Clarkson dropped two 3-2 decisions to UCAA foes Union and Skidmore on September 15 and 16. The Golden Knights took the Dutchmen to overtime, but a goal in the waning seconds gave Union the win. The Thoroughbreds held off a late Golden Knight surge when Bud scored at 77:36 to make things interesting.

Returning home on September 21, the Golden Knights put on a shutout performance against both Ithaca and Elmira. Clarkson blanked the bombers 2-0 on Friday, and then put up a six-goal effort Saturday against the Soaring Eagles, as Banz picked up two goals and an assist to lead the Knights in scoring.

Looking to break into the win column against UCAA foes, Clarkson hosted Rensselaer and Vassar. The Knights needed overtime, but they overcame the Red Hawks 2-1 in the extra session as Banz took a Bud feed and put it home in the second overtime period. Both men went 1-1 in the contest. Clarkson picked up its second win in the UCAA when it secured its fifth shutout of the season by beating the Brewers 2-0.

The Golden Knights traveled the 10 miles to the campus of St. Lawrence as both teams renewed their rivalry on October 6. On a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon, Morey's late goal was not enough to overcome the Saints in a tough 2-1 contest.

On October 12 Clarkson returned to Potsdam for its final two UCAA contests of the season against Hamilton and Hobart. Although the Knights lost to the Continentals on Friday 3-1, Saturday saw a dominating performance against the Statesmen, as Jagusztyn had two goals and Morey picked up three assists in the 4-0 win.

The following weekend saw the Green and Gold host a pair of Rochester-based teams in RIT and Nazareth. On Friday, October 19, Clarkson stormed past the Tigers 5-0, as Bud and Morey each picked up a goal and an assist in the win, and then on Saturday afternoon the Knights beat the Golden Flyers 3-0, completing a perfect shutout weekend.

Oswego was the last team Clarkson hosted for the season, and although the Lakers took the early lead, the Knights picked up three goals in ten minutes, and then held off a late surge to defeat Oswego 3-2 on October 23.

Looking to continue its four-game win streak, Clarkson took to the road for its final two games of the season against ranked opponents. Saturday, October 27, saw the Knights drop a tough 2-0 game to Plattsburgh, before traveling to Rochester to compete against the University of Rochester. The Green and Gold took the Yellowjackets to two overtimes, but neither team could break the tie, as the game ended one-all. Dorey made his homecoming appearance count, as his goal tied the game late in the first half for Clarkson.

After shutting out regionally ranked RIT 5-0 on Friday afternoon, the Golden Knights came back with another dominating effort on Saturday at Clarkson Field to blank Nazareth 3-0.

CLARKSON MEN'S SOCCER EAGER FOR START of 2001 CAMPAIGN
Though the 2000 campaign wasn't the season that head coach Willi Steinrotter had in mind, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team showed signs of rebuilding towards returning as an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) power with several key wins and promising play from many of the team's young players last year. Now, with a year of experience under their belts and the lessons learned from numerous one-goal defeats, the Golden Knights look to challenge for top honors in the conference in 2001.

CLARKSON CLOSES OUT SUCCESSFUL GERMANY TRIP
The Clarkson University Men's Soccer team enjoyed a productive nine-day trip in Germany by posting a 4-2-1 record in preseason action against several strong club teams in Bavaria. Sixteen Golden Knights made the overseas journey, which lasted from August 6-15.

"It was a real good team-building experience," stated 12th-year head coach Willi Steinrotter. "We played some real good soccer at times and learned some things that will help us during the season. We did not go over there for wins and losses, but to get some playing experience under our belts. It was definitely a worthwhile experience for our team. The guys had a great time. It should help us during the regular season to get over that hump we have not been able to get over the past couple of years."

Clarkson opened the trip with a pair of strong efforts against two of the top amateur club teams in the region. On Wednesday, August 8, the Golden Knights battled Hausham in a tight game before the veteran German team scored twice in a 90 second span during the final 15 minutes to pull out the victory. Junior Zach Ogden (Duxbury, MA) was exceptionally strong in goal with a 15-save effort. Hausham outshot the Knights 18-13.

On Thursday after an afternoon tour of the castle at Schlob Herrenchiemsee, Clarkson traveled to the town of Rimsting to play their experienced club team. During a steady downpour, the Knights held off an early first-half surge by TSV Rimsting and then took control with two goals midway through the second half. Senior Matt Secko (Shoreham, NY) put Clarkson on the scoreboard with a hard, high shot from 35 yards out that found its way just under the crossbar. Junior Jonathan Banz (Dix Hills, NY) earned the assist. Junior Collin Fingon (Rutland, VT) finished off a nice pass from classmate Mike Bud (Canandaigua, NY) during a two-on-one break with a low shot into the left corner to give the Knights a two-goal margin. Ogden enjoyed another solid effort in goal with eight saves to post the shutout. Clarkson outshot Rimsting 14-11.

The Knights played three forty-minute games during a festival in the town of Parsberg on Saturday. After a slow start in the opening contest, a 2-1 loss to TSV Emmering, Clarkson came back with two dominating efforts to claim second place in the four-team tournament. Emmering took advantage of an early lapse by Clarkson scoring in the opening moments of play. Secko converted a pass from sophomore Christophe Vaugeois (Washington, D.C.) to tie the game midway through the first half. Emmering gained the victory with a late second-half score.

The Knights started fast in the second game, scoring in the first minute as Banz took a pass from Bud in the goal box and scored the first of three straight Clarkson goals in the 3-1 victory over the host team SV Parsberg. Senior Matt Thomas (North Rose, NY), off an assist from Fingon, and Vaugeois also scored as the Green and Gold jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead.

In the final game of the day for Clarkson, the Knights shutout TSV Bad Wiessee 2-0. Senior Chris Werely (Hamburg, NY) knocked in a rebound off a free kick from Vaugeois to score the first goal of the game early in the second half. Banz scored in front off an assist by Secko to close out the scoring. Ogden was called upon to make just one save to record the shutout.

In Sunday's match at Mintraching, against the town's top, young junior squad, Clarkson jumped out to a 3-1 advantage after 45 minutes. The Knights then added two more scores early in the second for a 5-1 margin before closing out the final 25 minutes with a ball control display. Banz, Thomas and Bud scored in the first half. Sophomore James Sa'Apereira (Corning, NY) finished off a nice play from Secko to start the second half, and then Vaugeois closed out the scoring with a low shot from the top of the box.

In its final game of the trip, on Tuesday August 14, the Knights played to a 2-2 tie on the artificial turf field of TSV Bad Wiessee. Clarkson scored first as Bud converted a pass from Vaugeois, who picked up his third assist of the trip, but then Bad Wiessee scored twice to take the lead. Bud picked up his third goal of the trip connecting on a pass from junior Matt Fox (Edwards, NY) late in the first half to force the 2-2 deadlock.

The Knights will continue preparation for the regular season when over 30 candidates return to campus for the first day of practice this Sunday. Clarkson will play a scrimmage against Queens University on Friday, August 24 and then have its annual Alumni Game on Saturday, August 25. The 16-game regular season begins on Saturday, September 1 when the Knights play a 12:30 p.m. game at cross-town rival Potsdam State.
