FORMER GOLDEN KNIGHTS’ SOCCER STANDOUT MICHAEL KIRMSE EARNS A-LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR
USA Today Story
Thanks to a game-winning goal by former Clarkson University soccer All-American Michael Kirmse in the 110th minute of the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals against Major League Soccer’s Dallas Burn, the A-League Rochester Rhinos have advanced to the Open Cup semifinals for the second time in four years.
Kirmse’s game-winning header and recent play off the Rhinos’ bench, which has helped him earn the nicknames "Super Sub" and "Mr. Versatility" from teammates, earned him A-League Player of the Week honors for the week of August 8-14.
Kirmse, a third-year Rhino who has played defense, midfield and forward, scored two goals in two wins last week, including the overtime game-winner against the Burn (August 11). He also came off the bench to score in a 4-1 win over Connecticut (August 15), extending his scoring streak to three games. Through 23 games, Kirmse has three goals and three assists for nine points this season. He had two goals and three assists last year.
"I always knew he could be an impact player at the next level," stated Clarkson head soccer coach Willi Steinrotter.
A 1994 Clarkson graduate, Kirmse was a 1993 All-America for the Golden Knights and helped to lead the Green and Gold to its best record ever, at 13-4-2, and the semifinal round of the 1993 NCAA Division III Tournament in his senior campaign. Selected as the 1993 Empire Athletic Association (EAA) Player of the Year, he is tied for second on the Golden Knights’ all-time scoring list with 97 points on 35 goals and 27 assists through 69 career games (1990-93). Kirmse holds Clarkson records for goals (16), assists (11), and points (42) in a season as well as assists in a game (3) and career (27).
Kirmse and the Rhinos have defeated two MLS teams in Open Cup play this year, having also defeated the Chicago Fire, last year’s MLS and Cup champion. Kirmse has proven to be a giant killer, having also assisted on the goal that helped defeat the Fire on July 14.
The Rhinos look to become the first A-League team to reach the Open Cup finals. With one more win, Rochester would move to the September 14 title match on ESPN.
After playing in an A-League game against the Toronto Lynx in Toronto this Friday night, Kirmse is expected to participate in Clarkson’s Annual Alumni men’s Soccer game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. on Clarkson Field.
