CLARKSON MEN'S LACROSSE SEASON WRAP UP
Though the Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team didn't make a return trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Golden Knights were ranked nationally throughout the spring season and once again emerged as one of the top teams in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) and New York Region. Headed by coach Bill Bergan, in his 15th year at the helm of the Golden Knights, and assistant Mike Sergi, Clarkson posted a 9-4 overall record and a 3-3 mark in the UCAA, a league in which five teams were ranked in the top 20 in the country at one point or another.

The Golden Knights season started off with a 10-9 loss, but following that surprise defeat to Geneseo, Clarkson ran off six straight wins by allowing fewer than four goals per contest. The Knights struggled with two losses to conference foes to close out the regular season, missing the conference tournament with a 3-3 mark.

The Clarkson defense, led by sophomore goalie Joe Zebrowski (Liverpool, NY), a UCAA Second-Team All-Star, kept the Knights in many close games and at time led them to victory, including a 5-4 triple-overtime thriller over conference opponent Rensselaer. Zebrowski and the Golden Knights' defense allowed their opponents to reach double-digits in goals only in the opening game of the season. Seniors Greg Arnold (East Amherst, NY) and Ryan McCarthy (Camillus, NY) each gained accolades as UCAA First-Team All-Stars. Breck TenEyck (Fayetteville, NY) and Rudy Perales (Avondale, PA) each were named UCAA Second-Team All-Stars and classmate Adam Nau (Webster, NY) also helped anchor the Clarkson defensive line. Besides the senior class, junior Taimer Vaber (Cortland, NY), sophomore Brad Ciszewski (Syracuse, NY), and freshmen Nathan Glenney (Milan, NH) and Joseph Van Cura (Webster, NY) helped lead Clarkson's defense, which allowed only 5.92 goals per game, the fifth-best figure in the NCAA this spring.

On the offensive side, the Golden Knights outscored their opponents 114-77 on the season. Junior attackman Patrick Ryan (Canton, NY) paced Clarkson with 25 goals while classmate Sean Pearce (Auburn, NY) led the team in assists (21) and points (44) while placing second with 23 goals. Pearce was named to the UCAA First-Team All-Star squad. Senior midfielder Matt Diana (Marshfield, MA), a UCAA All-Star Honorable Mention, was third on the team in goals and points with 9 and 11, respectively. Freshman attackman T.J. Drake (Rochester, NY) came through in his first year for the Golden Knights with eight goals and three assists while sophomore Richard Burritt (Oswego, NY) added seven goals and three assists. Junior Dan Amedro (Syracuse, NY) followed up as the sixth player with at least 10 points on the season (6-4). Also contributing to lesser degrees on offense was senior Ryan Bodkin (East Amherst, NY), sophomores Brian Murphy (Camillus, NY), Andrew Branson (Marcellus, NY), and Matthew Shortway (Sussex, NJ), junior Matt Owen (Watertown, NY) and freshmen AJ Heiligman (Webster, NY), Travis Rohlin (Newark, NY), and Ryan McMahon (Baldwinsville, NY).

Injuries certainly hurt the Golden Knights offensively as senior attackmen Jim Lavelle (Hamburg, NY) and Marty Reid (Hamburg, NY) combined to play in only four games, totaling 11 points in their limited action.

Contributing in the midfield on both defense and offense were senior Marc Douglas (Clay, NY), juniors Pat Duggan (East Amherst, NY), Drew Burke (Liverpool, NY) and Derek Macioce (Massena, NY) and freshmen Brian Hanlon (Marcellus, NY), Nathan Snell (Medina, NY), and Brian Johnson (Newark, NY).

Helping out Zebrowski in goal were senior Brian Pratt (Randolph, NJ) and freshman Dustin Mackin (Falmouth, ME). The two combined to play in five games, allowing less than six goals in over 65 minutes.

SEVEN KNIGHTS EARN UCAA LACROSSE HONORS
The Clarkson University Men's Lacrosse team was well represented on the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) All-Star team with seven Golden Knights earning honors, including three first-team selections.

Clarkson's leading scorer, junior Sean Pearce (Auburn, NY) was honored as a first-team attackman, while seniors Greg Arnold (East Amherst, NY) and Ryan McCarthy (Camillus, NY) gained first-team recognition on defense.

A 2002 UCAA Honorable Mention All-Star and a two-time conference All-Academic team selection, Pearce scored 44 points on 23 goals and a team-high 21 assists through 13 games this spring as Clarkson posted a 9-4 overall record, including a 3-3 UCAA mark. Through 38 career games, Pearce has tallied 69 goals and 43 assists for 112 points.

A pair of UCAA Honorable Mention All-Stars last year, Arnold and McCarthy helped anchor one of the stingiest defensive units in the country in 2003. The Knights allowed just 5.92 goals per game to rank fifth nationally in scoring defense. The two also chipped in offensively. Arnold scored three goals, while McCarthy tallied two goals and two assists.

Named to the league's second-team were senior long-stick midfielder Breck TenEyck (Fayetteville-Manlius, NY), junior defenseman Rudy Perales (Avondale, PA) and sophomore goaltender Joe Zebrowski (Liverpool, NY). TenEyck and Perales, a 2001 UCAA First-Team All-Star who missed all of last season with an injury, played a large role in Clarkson's strong defensive play. UCAA Rookie of the Year in 2002, Zebrowski continued his outstanding play in the Knights' goal this spring to gain league second-team honors for the second straight year. Starting all 13 games, Zebrowski ranked among the top six goaltenders in the country with a 5.85 goals against average and a 6.79 save percentage.

Senior Matt Diana (Marshfield, MA) was named an honorable mention all-star midfielder after scoring 11 points (9-2) along with strong play on faceoffs. Diana scored the winning goal in triple overtime in Clarkson's 5-4 victory over UCAA rival Rensselaer at Hantz Field on April 13.
