2000-01 MEN'S BASKETBALL WRAP-UP
Decimated by injuries throughout the year, the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team struggled to a 7-18 overall mark and 3-11 record in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) during the regular season and the pre-season projected starting lineup played together just once during the entire season. However, the Golden Knights certainly appear to be laying the groundwork for a quick rise to the top of the UCAA.
Junior guard Nick Redhead (Central Square, NY) finished the season with the third-highest scoring average in the UCAA at 18.1 points per game and was approaching the Clarkson record for most points by a junior before missing two games at the end of the regular season with an ankle injury. Redhead was named a UCAA First-Team All-Star. Sophomore guard Lee Roes (Lowville, NY), who also missed the final two games of the regular season with an ankle injury, finished sixth in the UCAA in scoring at 16.0 points per game. Roes ranked eighth in 3-point field goal percentage and 13th in field goal percentage in the UCAA. He also finished fifth in 3-point field goals made per game and was 17th in rebounding in the UCAA and was named UCAA Honorable Mention. Both Roes and Redhead gained accolades from the UCAA, each garnering a Guard of the Week award from the UCAA during the season.
Leading the team from his point guard position was senior co-captain Eric Saucier (Concord, NH). After missing the first seven games of the season due to a broken foot, Saucier finished the season second in the UCAA in assists at 6.9 per game. His 124 assists give him 357 for his career, which rank fourth all-time at Clarkson.
Also contributing in the backcourt were freshmen Josh Harner (Houston, TX), Kevin Williams (Syracuse, NY), Dan Broderick (Westport, NY)and junior Lenny Williams. Harner was the third-leading scorer for the Golden Knights through the first 17 games of the season, averaging 8.8 points per game off the bench.
Harner was named the UCAA Freshman of the Week in January after posting 42 points in two games against Union and Skidmore. Kevin Williams, Broderick and Lenny Williams each made solid contributions off the bench for the Knights.
Senior co-captain Mark Ruddy (Brampton, ONT) returned from back problems late in the season to help the Golden Knights solidify the frontcourt. Ruddy scored in double-digits in three of the final six games and finished the season as the Knights’ second-leading shot blocker in school history.
Sophomore forward Steve Godlewski also emerged as a solid player down the stretch, scoring in double-digits five times while grabbing 10 or more rebounds twice in the last four games. Freshmen Jim Higgins (Croton-on-Hudson, NY) and Michael Case (Liverpool, NY) also showed improvement throughout the year and look ready to make a larger contribution to the Knights in the future.

Clarkson opens the season at the North Country Invitational On November 17-18 at St. Lawrence University. The Knights will face Oswego in the opening round on Friday. Potsdam and St. Lawrence will tip-off in the other first round game.
Senior co-captain Eric Saucier (Concord, NH) returns as a graduate student for his fourth year of eligibility and should continue to improve at point guard for the Knights. Saucier led the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association (UCAA) 6.8 assists per game last season and recorded the third-highest single-season assist total in Clarkson history when he contributed 176 assists. He currently ranks 10th all-time in Clarkson Men’s Basketball history with 233 and could become just the third player every to reach 400 in a career. Saucier will miss the first portion of the season with a broken foot.
Senior co-captain Mark Ruddy (Brampton, Ontario) has proven to be an emotional leader for the Knights’ ever since he put on the Green and Gold. Ruddy looks to solidify the Knights’ frontcourt with his play in the post. Ruddy averaged over five points and four rebounds in 23 games last season and should be a key component in leadership and production for Clarkson this season.
Other returning players for the Knights this winter are juniors Scott Sherman (Westport, NY) and Lenny Williams (Snellville, GA) as well as sophomores Lee Roes (Lowville, NY), Steve Godlewski (Rotterdam, NY), and Mike Pearson (Baldwinsville, NY). Sherman started a dozen games for the Knights while Williams was a solid contributor off the bench. Roes finished third on the team in scoring with 8.5 points per game and came up even bigger in UCAA league games, averaging more than 10 points per contest. Both Godlewski and Pearson logged important time on the court and should improve their games this season.
Several newcomers to the Knights hope to fill the void left by several of last year’s standouts. Junior guard Nick Redhead (Central Square, NY), a junior transfer from LeMoyne, is an excellent player with a great attitude and should contribute to the Knights right away. Freshman guards Kevin Williams (Syracuse, NY), Dan Broderick (Westport, NY) and Josh Harner (Houston, TX) can also add to Clarkson’s scoring punch.
Freshman forwards Jim Higgins (Croton-on-Hudson, NY), Gannon Gambeski (Smithtown, NY), and Michael Case (Liverpool, NY) also look to add to the Clarkson frontcourt.
