22974Game Recap: With a wide assortment of offensive weapons and a solid defensive effort, Ithaca College was able to overcome 26 hitting errors to defeat Babson College in four sets in the NCAA Division III Volleyball Potsdam Regional Final on Sunday afternoon.

In the first set, the Bombers jumped out with the first three points, but Babson responded with four straight to take the early lead. That was the last the Beavers would hold an advantage, as Ithaca took its time and slowly pulled away. Kills from Reagan Stone and Amanda CerrutiĀ gave Ithaca a 17-14 edge making the Beavers call a timeout, but the break did little to quell the rally, as Stone came out of the timeout with three straight aces. That margin was enough for the Bombers, as Ithaca closed out the set with an ace from Caitlyn Floyd.Ā

Set two was a back and forth affair with each team compiling some solid streaks. With the match tied at 11-11, Babson went on a 6-1 run to gain a five-point lead (17-12), only to watch Ithaca come all the way back to take a 22-21 lead late. Despite the relinquished lead, the Beavers regained some momentum with two kills from Allie Puccio and then closed out the set thanks to aces from Abby Beecher.

Once again in the third set, Babson and Ithaca were tied at 11-11, but the Beavers knocked off two quick points with an ace from Beecher and a kill from Puccio. The Bombers didn't waiver, however, responding with a 10-2 run thanks to two kills and a block from Caroline GerulskisĀ to make the score 21-15. Following a timeout, Babson responded with three straight points, but Ithaca took a break of its own and got kills from Gerulskis and CerrutiĀ to push the advantage back to five, which the final margin concluding at that number.

Possibly leg weary from the previous evening's five-set match against Clarkson, Babson fell behind early and could never recover. Ithaca watched a 6-5 lead expand all the way to 19-11 as CerrutiĀ found a rhythm that saw her gain three kills in a four-point stretch. Two errors by the Bombers brought Babson back within six, but Ithaca just had too much offense down the stretch and finally ended the set back-to-back kills from Stone and Gerulskis.

Caitlyn Floyd finished one dig shy of a double-double, recording 40 assists and nine digs for the Bombers. Floyd found Reagan Stone for 12 kills and Joelle Goldstein for 10 more kills, while Amanda Cerruti finished with nine kills and four blocks and Katie Evans ended with eight kills and four blocks. Stone also contributed five aces. Tara StilwellĀ recorded 18 digs and Hailey Adler chipped in 11 digs. For Babson, setter Elizabeth Cameron notched 30 assists and 13 digs, three short of Abby Beecher's team-high 16 digs, who also had five of the Beavers' eight aces. On offense, Allie Puccio scored 13 kills, while Gabby Miller, Kristin Carosotto, and Shannon Roseen each added seven kills.Ā

22970Game Recap: Two former conference foes battled it out in the Potsdam Regional Semifinals, with Ithaca avenging a loss from just two weeks ago with a four-set victory over Stevens on Saturday afternoon.Ā

It appeared as if Stevens was in a good position after winning the first set with a score of 25-20 and leads in the second 18-15 after back-to-back aces from Shelby Stewart. However, Ithaca scored seven straight points thanks to two kills and a solo block from Amanda Cerruti. That was enough to sway the momentum in the second set as the Bombers evened up the match at 1-1. The third set was another tight game between the familiar foes, as again Stevens enjoyed a solid lead (16-12) a little after the midway point. Ithaca came back to tie the set at 18-18, again on a kill from Cerruti, but there would be no grand run after that. Neither team could gain a two-point advantage through regulation, forcing extra points. A blocking error gave Stevens a set point at 26-25, but a kill from Cerruti, a kill from Joelle Goldstein, and a hitting error gave the Bombers set number three. Possibly deflated, Stevens still came out strong in the fourth set and had a two point lead (10-8) in the early going, but Ithaca scored seven of the next eight points to gain a 15-11 advantage. Consecutive kills from Reagan Stone made it 18-12 and the two teams essentially traded points the rest of the way, with the Bombers scoring the final four to pull out a 25-17 win.

Amanda CerrutiĀ stood out for Ithaca, scoring 16 kills to go along with three blocks, while Reagan Stone contributed 13 kills and eight digs and Joelle Goldstein had a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs. Caitlin Floyd ran the offense with 54 assists and Tara StilwellĀ recorded a team-best 20 digs. Stevens was led by Casey King and Emily Singleton, who each scored 11 kills, while Sara HainĀ tossed in nine kills and four total blocks. Shelby Stewart also had seven kills, four blocks, and three aces. Julie Greco picked up 36 assists and Sydni Horner had a match-high 22 digs.Ā

22969Game Recap: In one of the longest matches that Alumni Gymnasium has seen in years, Babson College outlasted host Clarkson University in a five-set thriller to advance to its first-ever NCAA Regional Final. The Beavers had a little trouble solving Clarkson in the first set until they started tipping over the Golden Knights block. The strategy kept Clarkson honest for the rest of the match and it made for some incredibly long rallies. The Knights led by four pointĀ (22-18) late in the first only to see Babson score six straight to take a 24-22 advantage and give themselves an early set point. Clarkson recovered from those two set points, as well as three others, however, to take a 29-27 win following block assists from Rachel Reusch and Maddie Bredehoeft. The second set again saw Clarkson take an early lead (11-7), but Babson knocked off nine straight points to gain a 16-11 advantage. The Knights would chip away at the small deficit, coming within one point on two different occasions, but Babson scored five of the final seven points to win the set.

The third set was even longer than the first. Babson rushed out to a 13-9 lead, but four straight points tied the score up, something that would occur numerous times down the stretch. Babson did push out to an 18-15 lead and still held a three-point advantage at 23-20, but Rachael AirdĀ truly asserted herself down the stretch, scoring a solo block and two kills to get the Knights to a set point (24-23). Although Babson tied the set up at 24-24, neither team could finish things off for some time. Down by one point, 31-30, Clarkson tied the set up at 31 with a kill from Maddie BredehoeftĀ and then took the lead on block assists from Aird and Jillian Saenz. A hitting error ended the set at 33-31 as momentum appeared to be in the Knights' favor.

Clarkson scored six of the first nine points in the fourth set, but Babson quickly recovered and tied the set at 7-7. Again, the two teams jockeyed back and forth, with the Beavers gaining a three-point lead (15-12), only to see it evaporate with Clarkson taking a 20-18 advantage late. It looked like Clarkson would win in four sets with Babson on its collective heels, but the Beavers came out of a timeout with two quick kills to tie the set at 20-20. Down by one after block assists from Clarkson's Rachel Reusch and Gillian Kurtic, Allie PuccioĀ began a four-of-five point rally with a kill and ended the set with a solo block.Ā

As expected, the fifth set was no different with both teams seesawing momentum. Babson took an early lead, but Clarkson came back to tie the score at 11-11 and then again at 12-12 on a kill from Reusch. A kill from PuccioĀ put Babson up one, an ace then put the Beavers at match point, and the night finally ended with a kill from Gabby Miller in the middle.Ā

Rachael AirdĀ was virtually unstoppable in her final collegiate match, recording 26 kills with a .380 hitting percentage to go along with 10 total blocks (three solo, seven assists) and a pair of aces. Rachel ReuschĀ was no slouch, either, hitting .340 with 19 kills and just a single error on 53 swings. Jillian Saenz found that duo for 45 of her 56 assists and also added 15 digs. Kate IsaksenĀ scored a career-high 48 digs in the five-setter for the Knights. Allie PuccioĀ picked up 25 kills for Babson and Gabby Miller added 18 kills. Shannon Roseen also scored 16 kills and Kristin Carosotto added 12 kills. Elizabeth Cameron found a number of teammates with 60 assists and also added 19 digs. Abby Beecher nearly matched Isaksen's effort with 45 digs from the libero spot.

22962Game Recap: Some long rallies highlighted the first match of the day, but Ithaca simply had too many offensive options for the Gulls and the the Potsdam Regional's First Round contest ended in a three-set sweep for the Bombers. The key came during the second set, as the Bombers trailed by four late (18-14), but a kill from Amanda Cerruti and consecutive aces from Tara StilwellĀ began a seven-point run from which Endicott could not recover. In the third set, Ithaca jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but saw that advantage disappear quickly as Endicott produced a six-point run of its own. With the two teams tied up at 10-10, however, Ithaca found offense from its middles Katie Evans and Amanda Cerruti, and the Bombers were able to finish things off in three straight.

Cerruti and Evans each finished with nine kills, and the duo combined for seven block assists. Tara Stilwell also produced 17 digs and three aces, while Caitlin Floyd added 31 assists and three block assists for the Bombers. For Endicott, Emma Mancini kept things close with 16 kills, but no other player for the Gulls had more than four kills. Cydney Pierce recorded 18 digs, while Zoey Gifford had 22 assists and 11 digs.Ā

22961Game Recap: Despite a deficit in size up front, Merchant Marine Academy put for a gritty effort against Stevens Institute of Technology in the second match up of the day, but the Ducks simply had too much firepower for the Mariners to overcome in a three-set sweep in the Potsdam Regional. In the first set, fell behind early with a flurry of aces from Shelby Stewart, but despite that deficit the Mariners rallied to make things interesting against the Ducks, pulling to within three (18-15) late in the set. Although it would go back and forth between a three and four point margin over the next few serves, Stevens was able to take advantage of a couple of errors to pull out the win. The second set was a dominant effort by the Ducks with a 15-0-28 hitting line, but the Mariners responded with a 6-1 lead to open things up in the third. Stevens scored picked up kills from Emily Singleton and then consecutive kills from Sara Hain to tie it up at 9-9, and the Ducks would never trail again, going on a 9-2 run to open the set up and cruise to the win.

Hain finished with nine kills and no errors in just 13 swings to go along with three block assists, while both Casey King and Emily Singleton finished with seven kills for the Ducks. Julie Greco ran the offense to the tune of 29 assists while Taleen Mitchell added six kills and 14 digs. Shelby Stewart also scored four kills, six aces, and three total blocks for Stevens. 22963Game Recap: Although Vassar had few answers in the first two sets for a diverse offense from Babson, the Brewers were able to rally and make things interesting, but the Beavers finished off the third match of the day in four sets. The Beavers came out as strong as possible with a 12-1 burst in the early going, with the lone point for Vassar coming on a service error. The deficit was entirely too much to overcome and the Brewers suffered a lopsided defeat. After that, however, both teams showed solid form, especially Babson, which saw three players finish in double figures for kills. Several hitters stepped up for Vassar as Babson keyed on Devan Gallagher, and that helped the Brewers force a fourth set. Trailing by five in the fourth game, Babson got two kills from Kristin CarosottoĀ to provide a spark, and the Beavers continued to ride the momentum with a 9-1 run. Although Vassar recovered to get within one point (21-20), aĀ pair of kills from Babson's Shannon Roseen late were enough to hold off the Brewers charge.Ā

Elizabeth Cameron found her Babson teammates to the tune of 39 assists to go along with 11 digs and three aces. Allie Puccio (12 kills), Kristin CarosottoĀ (12 kills) and Gabby Miller (10 kills) each reached double figures on offense, while Abby Beecher recorded 28 digs.Ā  For Vassar, DevanĀ Gallagher took 61 swings to pick up 16 kills as the Beavers focused on the junior outside, while Lauren NinkavichĀ came through 12 kills and 11 digs. Annie MacMillan had a double-double with 33 assists and 12 digs while Anna ZuccheroĀ picked up 26 digs.Ā

22964Game Recap: A spunky Morrisville State squad provided plenty of competition for the top-seeded Clarkson University in the final match of the first round in the Potsdam Regional, but the Golden Knights still handled their business with a three-set sweep. Backed by a solid crowd of supporters, the Mustangs played a fiery brand of volleyball, but in the first set Clarkson proved to be too much for them to handle. A narrow margin between the two teams expanded quickly thanks to a big block from Clarkson that made things difficult for the Mustangs. Following block assists from Rachael Aird and Kendall Cheval, Morrisville found itself down 14-7, but rallied to get back within four (16-12). That was as close as the Mustangs would get, though, as the Knights rattled off seven straight points with a kill and two aces from Cheval, cruising to a 25-15 win. Set number two was nothing like the first, however, as Morrisville hung around and trailed by just one (17-16) after block assists from Elycia Crittenden and Lindsay Sunderlage, forcing the Knights to take a timeout. Out of the break, it still took a few more points to create a more signficiant edge, but back-to-back aces from Jillian SaenzĀ put the set out of reach as Clarkson gained a 25-21 win. The third set was a near repeat of the second as MorrisvilleĀ trailed by just two after the first 20 serves (11-9). At that point, Rachael AirdĀ took over, scored four kills in an eight-point stretch to push the Knights out to a 19-10 lead. It was just a matter of time before the Knights finished things off and Clarkson ended with that same nine-point separation.Ā

Rachael AirdĀ recorded 14 kills and added three block assists to lead Clarkson's offense, while Rachel ReuschĀ delivered a .571 hitting percentage on 13 kills and just a single error in 21 attempts. Jillian SaenzĀ picked up five kills to go along with her 35 assists and three aces, and Kate Isaksen recorded 21 digs for the Knights. On Morrisville's side, Megyan Merrill scored nine kills to go along with nine digs and Amelia Baratier had seven kills and six digs. MorrisvilleĀ also saw Helena Hanes recorded 14 assists with five kills and Kim Dunkelman chipped in 10 assists. Samantha Wolf also notched 16 digs and a pair of aces for the Mustangs.Ā
