During the mid-1970s, Clarkson Hockey boasted some of the most productive offenses in the nation, and a large part of the Golden Knights’ success could be attributed to the stellar play on the blueline by Bill Blackwood

Blackwood was an all-star defenseman with a booming shot from the point and was a dominant force for the Green and Gold from 1974-78. The Golden Knights’ all-time leading scorer from the blueline, the Copper Cliff, Ontario native tallied 169 points, including 52 goals, in 123 career games. He is one of only six Clarkson defensemen all-time to record 100-plus points. Blackwood still ranks third all-time among all Golden Knights in career assists with 117.

He was twice named an All-America (1977, 78) and was a three-time ECAC All-Star along with being recognized on ECAC Hockey’s 1970s All-Decade First Team. Blackwood helped to lead the Green and Gold to the 1977 ECAC regular-season title as the top scoring defenseman in the conference.

The 5-10, 180-pound junior tallied 71 points, including 54 assists, through 34 games as the Knights skated to a 26-8 overall record and a first-place 19-4 conference mark. Clarkson scored a school-record 223 goals that season, and the specialty teams were outstanding. With Blackwood quarterbacking the power play, and Clarkson Hall of Famers Dave Taylor ’77 and Kevin Zappia ’79 converting up front, the Knights clicked at amazing rate of 42% with the man-advantage (89-210). The penalty-killing unit was equally as intimidating with 18 shorthanded tallies.

Blackwood served as a Golden Knight co-captain in his senior campaign of 1977-78 and helped to lead Clarkson to 19 wins and a top-three finish in the ECAC standings.

Missing only one game while at Clarkson, Blackwood was a leading contributor to the Knights’
 
success as head coach Jerry York’s teams combined for 76 victories during his four-year career wearing the Green and Gold. During Blackwood’s residency on the Clarkson blueline, the Knights’ power play, click at a remarkable 35% (227-645).

After completing his collegiate career, Blackwood played three games in the World Hockey Association for the Indianapolis Racers in 1977-78. He then went on to played two full seasons with the Fort Wayne Komets in the International Hockey League. From 1978-80, Blackwood skated in 152 professional games and recorded 104 points, including 80 assists.

During the 2010-11 collegiate hockey campaign, marking ECAC Hockey’s 50th season, Blackwood was honored by the league when he was named to ECAC Hockey’s prestigious All-Time Top 50 Team.
