Clarkson Hockey has showcased many notable players in its long, tradition-rich history, but only Tom Hurley can make the claim as the Golden Knights’ first Olympian.

A talented, smooth-skating center, Hurley went from playing on the outdoor rinks of Massena, N.Y. to the collegiate ice at Walker Arena and on to the U.S. Olympic team becoming the first student-athlete at Clarkson to compete in the international event. At Massena, Hurley improved his game under the guidance of his high school coach, former Clarkson standout Stan Moore, building the foundation that would lead to an impressive career with the Golden Knights.

Hurley skated for the Green and Gold from 1963-66 and played a leading role on head coach Len Ceglarski’s teams that posted an impressive .772 winning percentage during his three-year career with Clarkson.

As a sophomore, in his first year of eligibility on the varsity, Hurley tallied 34 points (15-19) as Clarkson posted a 17-7-1 overall record in 1963-64. He led the Green and Gold in scoring the following year with 15 goals and 13 assists as the Knights went 18-7. As a senior in 1965-66, Hurley was a productive force up front as Clarkson enjoyed one of its best seasons ever. The North Country native was the Knights’ leading playmaker with 30 assists, added 12 goals and was a top performer in postseason play.

With Hurley playing at his best, the Knights claimed the Clarkson Hockey program’s first ECAC Tournament title in 1966. The Knights defeated Cornell 6-2 in the championship game at the Boston Arena. Hurley was selected to the all-tournament team and was honored as a second-team ECAC All-Star.

Clarkson moved on to the 1966 NCAA Tournament and promptly knocked off Denver 4-3 in the semifinal round before falling to Michigan State, 6-1, in the national championship game at Williams Arena in Minneapolis. Hurley again was recognized for his strong performance and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament first-team.

Hurley completed his collegiate career as the first North Country native to exceed 100 career points. Playing in 74 games, he amassed 42 goals and 62 assists and helped to lead the Green and Gold to 59 victories, an ECAC Regular Season title, a conference tournament championship and a berth in a NCAA Championship game.

Hurley also excelled for the Clarkson baseball team in the spring, playing for legendary coaches Hank Hodge and Jack Phillips. A starting centerfielder in each of his three years on the varsity, he was named team captain in his  senior campaign.

After graduating from Clarkson with a degree in Business Administration, Hurley played for the U.S. National Hockey team in 1967 and then joined the Olympic team the next spring. He competed for the United States at the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, France. Hurley’s Olympic appearance is captured in the squad’s team photo. He is seated in the front row, next to the team’s captain, future Miracle on Ice coach Herb Brooks.
