ED ROWE '57
Inaugural Class of 1992 Inductee
Perhaps the most prolific scorer in college hockey history, Ed Rowe, a 5-10, 160-pound center, skated in 66 games for Clarkson from 1954-57 and averaged 2.76 points a game. A two-time All-America selection (1956, 1957), Rowe is among the elite of the Golden Knights all-time scoring leaders with 182 points on 87 goals and 95 assists. From 1955 through 1957, he set an NCAA record scoring at least one point in 38 consecutive games.
Rowe was the Knight's leading scorer during the undefeated season of 1955-56 scoring 65 points on 27 goals and 38 assists as Clarkson skated to a 23-0 mark. He was captain of the 1956-57 team during his senior season, which posted a 19-3 record and made Clarkson's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. A top-notch play maker, stick handler, and scorer, Rowe again led the Green and Gold in scoring with 31 goals and 32 assists for 63 points. He was named a first-team all-star for the second straight year in the Tri-State league and also earned co-MVP honors in the conference.
In the consolation game of the 1957 NCAA Tournament, Rowe tallied the game winner in overtime to lift the Knights to a 2-1 triumph over Harvard. After the game, Coach Harrison, who was jubilant over the thrilling manner in which Clarkson gained its first ever NCAA
Tournament victory, was loud in his praise of his players. "The boys did a great job," said Harrison. "I couldn't think of a better way to end up the game than to have Rowe score as he did."
Rowe began his Clarkson varsity career on an impressive note during the 1954-55 campaign, ranking as the Knights' third high scorer with 51 points, including a team-high 28 goals in 20 games. He earned second-team all-star honors in the Tri-State League and was also named to league's Top Sophomore performer.
A native of Cornwall, Ontario, Rowe earned a mechanical engineering degree from Clarkson in 1957. Rowe has been honored by the city of Peterborough, Ontario, for his involvement with minor hockey and was named a Hockey Hall of Fame Selection in Cornwall, Ontario.
The Clarkson University Athletic Hall of Fame was founded to honor and perpetuate the memory of those individuals who, either through participation, support or interest have made outstanding contributions to Clarkson athletics, and who have helped to bring recognition, honor and distinction to the University. It is with great pride that Clarkson inducts Ed Rowe into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
