Gillett Scores Two, Knights Open 2025 Campaign

Potsdam, N.Y.- Senior Lillian Gillett notched a brace as the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team fought back from a goal down, twice, to earn a 2-2 tie with the University of Hartford, Friday evening.

The Golden Knights return to action Wednesday, September 3rd, as they host Plattsburgh State at Hantz Field with kick-off slated for 4 p.m.

Hartford took control of possession early on, crafting a few good chances in their attacking third but were unable to find the finishing touch in the opening going. The best chance for the Golden Knights came by way of Jamie Dahlgard, whose long-range attempt from outside the penalty box threatened to drop over the retreating Hartford keeper, but just barely crept over the crossbar to nestle on the top of the goal.

Neither team waited long after the half-time break to provide a breakthrough on either end as a ball forward from Anastasia Nerney, on the break for the Hawks, found the feet of Kathleen Brush who slotted a well-placed finish into the bottom left side of the goal to open the scoring in the 48th minute for the visitors. The Golden Knights would produce an almost immediate answer just 41 seconds later, with Gillett picking off a scuffed clearance from the Hartford keeper on the right wing. The midfielder beat two defenders to her right and sent a ball across the goal that looked at first to be a cross but ended up in the bottom left corner of the goal to tie the contest.

The Hawks continued to ask questions of the Clarkson defense as the game progressed with the midfield lofting balls over the top and working passes out to both wings to construct attacking opportunities. The pressure soon paid off in the 62nd minute with a ball snapped out to Nerney on the right wing. The attacker worked her way past the outside of the Golden Knight defense to deliver a low ball across the penalty area for Mayson Massaro to eventually tuck into the left side of the goal and restore the goal advantage for Hartford.

Clarkson would again have a quick answer in the 67th minute as Brooke Everest picked off a pass on the left side of the  attacking zone for the Golden Knights. Her quick turn on the ball found Gillette in the middle of the field who unleashed a driven shot from 25 yards out that ricocheted off the left post and into the net to notch the game at two goals apiece. Both teams created some chances in the remaining 20 minutes of the contest. Two impressive saves from Isabelle Wood in net for the Golden Knights in the closing minutes ensured that both teams ended level.

Hartford would hold an advantage in shots (11-5) and shots on goal (5-4). Wood would be credited with three saves for Clarkson over the 90 minutes while Sejal Johnson stopped two shots on the other end for the Hawks.
