Potsdam, N.Y.- Madelynn Barnum tallied a game-high four goals in attack as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team dropped a 10-7, Liberty League contest to Union, Friday afternoon.
Clarkson falls to 8-6 overall, 2-5 in conference play while Union climbs to 9-3, with a 5-3 record in the Liberty League. The Knights are back in action Saturday, April 19th, hosting Skidmore at 2 p.m.
The Garnet Chargers opened the scoring with two unassisted goals in the opening four minutes. Barnum would tie the game with two tallies of her own, less than a minute apart as an unassisted effort and feed from Gabby Cranfield squared the game up at two apiece just under six minutes in. Another Union goal would be answered by Barnum again with under four minutes remaining in the period and the game knotted at three. Union managed to tack on another, gaining a 4-3 advantage after the opening 15.
Gillian Joseph would reestablish the visitor's two goal advantage in the opening minutes of the second period before Barnum would answer again with her fourth goal of the half, as her unassisted score cut Union's lead back to one. Lauren Shanahan managed to find the back of the net off a feed from behind the crease from Sydney Nakas but Union would tally on two more goals to take a 7-5 lead into the break.
Both teams faced a bit of a slow start in the second-half as Makenna Cassin would provide the first scoring action with nearly two minutes remaining in the third. Her first goal of the contest, off a feed from Barnum, brought the Knights to back within one but a Union goal with 18 seconds remaining in the period provided an 8-6 lead for the Garnet Chargers entering the final stanza.
Cranfield added a second goal of her own about three minutes into the fourth as the Knights hoped to capitalize on momentum with more than half of the period remaining and the visitor's advantage standing at just one. One would be as close as Clarkson would get however as costly turnovers and two goals in quick succession for Union, five minutes later, provided the insurance needed for a 10-7 victory.
Clarkson would control the draw circle 13-8 while both teams collected 16 ground balls apiece. Union would manage a 29-20 advantage in shots and 19-11 advantage in shots on goal.
Riley Donovan made nine stops in between the pipes for the Knights while Sydney Widlitz stopped four shots for Union.
