Knights Sweep for Second Straight Day in Florida

Clermont, FL - Closing out the spring trip on a high note, the Clarkson University Softball team swept Worcester State and Lawrence University to improve its winning streak to four straight games.

The Golden Knights, winners of five of the last six games, defeated Worcester State 7-6 and then downed Lawrence University 6-1. Clarkson is off for a week, returning to action against Oswego State on March 28th.

Twice the Golden Knights put themselves in a hole against Worcester State, but each time the Green and Gold had an answer. In the first inning, Morgan Keefe singled in Emma Lanpher to put Worcester up 1-0, but the Knights tied things up when Kaya Johnson scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom half of the frame. An inning later, Keefe delivered a two-run double and then scored on a single by Bella Gasbarro to make it 4-1 and Camden Heenan left the park on a two-run homer to left in the third for a 6-1 Lancers lead. Those runs, however, would be the last for Worcester State as Clarkson clawed back. Kaya Johnson dropped a three-run homer which scored Emma Sabourin and Maddie Throumoulos in the third, pulling the Knights within two. Two innings later, another three-run homer, this time off the bat of Devin Fitzpatrick, gave Clarkson its first lead of the game.

Fitzpatrick then made sure that Worcester State would not score again, coming on to pitch in the sixth inning. She tossed a scoreless sixth inning, but had a runner reach in the seventh on an error. That runner eventually made it to third with just one out, but a shallow fly out to right and a swinging strikeout ended the threat and the game.

Kaya Johnson and Elissa Uveino each went 3-for-3 in the game, while Fitzpatrick tossed two scoreless frames and was 2-for-3 at the dish.

Game two saw Lawrence also jump out ahead of the Knights in the first inning when Zoe Doherty hit a one-out solo home run. However, that was all the scoring that the designated home team would do in the contest. Clarkson, on the other hand, hit regularly the rest of the way. In the top of the third, Isabel Haspil singled with one out and was followed by a two-run shot to left by Devin Fitzpatrick to give the Knights the lead.

Bridget Kerwin cut down a runner at the plate with a throw to end the third and keep the Green and Gold ahead by one, allowing the Knights to tack on insurance runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Shaelee Torres scored on a single by Kaya Johnson and Emma Sabourin came around safely on a sacrifice bunt to make it 4-1 in the fourth. Fitzpatrick homered to center in the fifth for Clarkson's fifth run, and then walked with the bases loaded in the sixth for another run batted in.

Fitzpatrick picked up the win in the pitching circle, going six innings with seven strikeouts against just one walk and six hits allowed. She was also 2-for-3 at the plate with four runs batted in. Johnson, Haspil, and Emily Burlone also enjoyed two hit days in the night cap.
