Overtime Loss Opens Knights Florida Trip

Davenport, FL – For the second straight game the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team needed overtime for a decision, but it was also the second straight time that the Golden Knights ended up on the short end, falling 12-11 to Western Connecticut State on Tuesday in Florida.

The Golden Knights fell to 4-2 overall while West Conn improved to 7-1 on the year. Clarkson takes on Juniata on Thursday before returning for Liberty League play.

Clarkson controlled the first period with four goals in the final nine minutes, including two from junior Morgan Kenna that gave the Knights a 4-1 lead through the opening 15. The balance shifted back towards Western Connecticut State in the second, as the Wolves had a three-goal advantage by tallying five, with the final one coming with only three seconds left on the clock.

Lopsided runs were over, however, once the second half started. Neither team held more than a one goal advantage for the rest of the contest. Clarkson trailed midway through the third at 8-7, but scored two straight to reclaim the lead and would not trail again for the remainder of regulation. Kenna scored off a pass from Gabby Cranfield with 5:34 to go, but the Wolves rallied back with a score 90 seconds later out of the stick of Faye Junge. Sydney Nakas and Morgan Kenna each had shots in the final three minutes that were kept out of the goal by Molly Bresnahan, and Jennaca McGill made a huge save with 15 seconds left to keep the game tied, sending the contest to overtime.

Clarkson won the initial draw and needed to hold the ball to kill off a penalty before the Wolves would take possession. With 34 seconds to go Madison Ratchford scored off an assist from Faye Junge to end the contest in the favor of West Conn.

Madelynn Barnum rolled the past the 250-point mark for her career, becoming just the third player in program history to do so, with six goals and an assist for a game-high seven points. Morgan Kenna notched four goals and Gabby Cranfield added a pair of assists. Jennaca McGill tied her career-high in saves with 13 in the contest.

For the Wolves, Madison Ratchford and Savannah Kom each recorded five points on three goals and two assists, while Faye Junge and Isabella Pota notched three points each. Molly Bresnahan had 14 saves for West Conn.
