CU Men's Basketball Preview - at RPI/Union (12/5-6)

Returning from a brief holiday hiatus, the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team travels to RPI and Union on Friday and Saturday for two important early-season Liberty League matchups.

The Series: The Golden Knights dropped both meetings at home and on the road to RPI and Union last year. The Engineers won both handily, with an average margin of victory of 21 points. The Garnet Chargers earned a 20 point win at home but narrowly escaped Alumni Gymnasium with a 71-70 win in the reverse contest in February. 

Key Stats for Clarkson (4-2, 0-1 Liberty League): The Knights are returning to the hardwood after a 62-52 win over SUNY Potsdam on November 25th, where the team shot 46% from the field with 36 points in the paint. Overall, the team is shooting 48% from the field on the season. Braeden Burns led all scorers against the Bears with 21 points, the junior leads the team with 17.3 ppg and 5.7 rebounds per game through an average of 31 minutes. Nate Abernethy had just four points on the 25th, the first time he has been held to single-digits, the freshman averages 15.5 ppg. Steve DeRegis rounds out the Clarkson scorers averaging above 10 a game with 13.3 points per outing having made a team-leading 21 threes. The junior has expanded his floor presence to start the campaign with averages of 5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. 

Key Stats for RPI (4-2): The last time out for the Engineers resulted in a 75-81 loss at Middlebury College on November 30th. Dylan Matchett led the team with 21 points on 5-5 shooting from behind the arc. Overall the team shot a remarkable 52% from the field and 65% from three in the loss. Currently, RPI is outscoring opponents by an average of 12.3 points per game, averaging just 10.7 turnovers per contest as well. Junior Yechiel Stewart leads the team in scoring numbers with 16 a game but has not played since November 16th. Andrew Deppe boasts 13 ppg along with 4.3 assists per game and a team-high 10 steals. Matchett averages 12.2 ppg while also polling down 6.8 rebounds per contest on average. 

Key Stats for Union (4-2): The Garnet Chargers have played their last two contests at home and will meet St. Lawrence, Friday evening, following a 56-97 loss to #1 Trinity (Conn.) in the championship of the Sig Makofski Invitational. Union beat Manhattanville, 88-66 in the first round, with three players scoring in double-figures. Overall, the team is shooting just 39% from behind the arc and 68% from the free throw line. Jack Plesser leads the Garnet Chargers with 23.8 ppg and 7.3 rebounds per game, the junior is shooting 60% from the field and a perfect 4-4 from three-point range. Tanner Tedesco commands the offense with 6.8 assists per game, the junior is tied for sixth in the nation in that category while also adding 13.2 ppg. Senior Christian Dufort and junior Matthew Garside round out scorers averaging double-figures as both sit on 10.2 points per game.
