Knights Score Twice Early, Control Brown 4-2

Potsdam, NY – Two goals in the first period and two more in the second allowed the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to continue its rediscovered offensive run as the Golden Knights downed Brown University 4-2 in ECAC Hockey action Friday evening at Cheel Arena.

The 11th-ranked Golden Knights improved to 8-5-1 overall and 4-2-1 in ECAC play, while Brown, ranked 12th nationally, fell to 7-3-1 and 3-3-1 in conference games. Clarkson will host another top-15 team tomorrow when the Knights take on Yale.

In the team's last outing, the Golden Knights broke out of a scoring slump with six goals against St. Lawrence, and the Green and Gold continued that run in the early going against Brown, tallying twice in the first six minutes. Both of the goals came on unsuccessful clears, with the first score coming off a pair of soft attempts around the right side boards. The second failed clear found the stick of Raedyn Spademan just a few feet above the right side circle, and she expertly thread the needle through traffic close to the goal line to Lara Beecher. Beecher's first attempt in front was denied by Rory Edwards, but the senior transfer stuck with the play and knocked in the rebound at 4:17 for her sixth goal of the 2025-26 campaign.

Clarkson's second goal came off a seemingly innocuous dump in by the Knights. Edwards played the puck behind the net and some slight pressure forced her to reconsider a clear along the boards, instead going closer to the right circle. However, Janelle Evans was there to intercept the puck and one quick pass to the slot gave Manon le Scodan a nearly wide open net to shoot upon, and she did not miss with a quick tip in at 5:22, her fifth goal of the season.

Although Brown was outshot 11-5 in the first period, the Bears quickly matched their total at the start of the second. The Bears began the period with an early power play and helped challenge Clarkson goaltender Holly Gruber with a couple of saves. Even after the power play was completed, Brown kept the puck in the offensive zone and continued to get solid looks at the Clarkson net, though the visitors were unable to get out past Gruber.

That would change during Brown's second power play, though it was very late in the opportunity. Clarkson made a change with about 15 seconds left on the penalty kill with the puck deep in Brown's defensive zone, but a rapid transition back down the ice found the Bears with some space to work. Sam Broz had the puck on the right side and sent a pass into the slot for India McDadi, who eluded her defenders and quickly dropped off a pass for Margot Norehad. Just a stride or two later, Norehad lifted a fast-paced backhand shot underneath the crossbar, putting the Bears on the board with only three seconds left in the power play at 6:15 in the second period.

Clarkson looked like it had a goal shortly after the media timeout, but it was called off due to a kicking motion producing the pass that resulted in the score. However, the Knights would still have their two-goal lead returned on the power play a few moments later. Several shots were taken, the first from the right dot and then two more in close that were deflected, but Janelle Evans was there on the left side post to finally knock the puck in, giving Clarkson a 3-1 edge at 14:26.

Barely 90 seconds later, the Knights scored on even strength when Kaitlyn Mallette flipped the puck forward to Jenna Smellie near the Brown blue line. Smellie skated in hard and made a decision to pass while at the left circle dot, centering the puck right on the doorstep where Madison Chantler knocked the puck in at 15:55, putting the score at 4-1. Mallette picked up her first collegiate point thanks to her assist.

A bit on cruise control in the third period, the Golden Knights maintained the score for most of the period until an odd bounce allowed Brown to pick up its second power play marker of the contest. Isabella Gratzl took a shot from above the left circle that looked to be well off the mark, but the puck redirected off a Clarkson defender at the bottom of the circle and snuck past Gruber with 53 seconds left in the contest.

Brown finished the game with a 26-25 edge in shots on goal and a 53-51 lead in total shots. Those totals were boosted by the Bears' extra skater opportunities as Brown was 2-for-6 while on the power play and the Knights were 1-for-2. Gruber made 24 saves for the Knights, while Rory Edwards made 14 saves and Anya Zupkofska stopped seven shots in relief.
