Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Knights Score Three in the Third For Comeback Win Over Fourth-Ranked Penn State

State College, PA – In a game riddled with early penalties and plenty of goals from Penn State's JJ Wiebusch, the Clarkson University Men's Hockey team defense buckled down in the third period and rallied for a come-from-behind 6-4 win over the fourth-ranked Nittany Lions on Thursday night at Pegula Ice Arena.

The Golden Knights gained their first win of the season to improve to 1-1 while Penn State fell to 2-1. The two teams will match up again on Friday evening.

It didn't take long for the Golden Knights to get on the scoreboard, as Talon Sigurdson was able to find the back of the net after a quick transition. Penn State had a couple of shots in the opening minute from Aiden Fink, but going the other way, Sigurdson knocked in a rebound in front of the goal with assists going to Luka Sukovic and Tristan Sarsland at 1:07.

JJ Wiebusch was a one-man wrecking crew for the Nittany Lions, scoring a natural hat trick by the fifth minute of the second period and recording four goals in the first 28 minutes of the contest. His first goal came on the power play at just 4:25 in the opening period as he lifted a shot just above the shoulder of Clarkson goaltender Shane Soderwall. Despite a few more penalty calls through the end of the first and the start of the second, the game remained 1-1 until Wiebusch converted again, finishing with a top shelf snipe at 2:05, assists going to Charlie Cerrato and Jackson Smith, making it 2-1. Only 90 some seconds later, Wiebusch closed out his natural hat trick with a second power play goal at 3:40.

Just as it appeared the floodgates had opened for Penn State, Clarkson scored less than a minute later to halt the Lions momentum. Shawn O'Donnell collected the puck shortly after delivering a check behind the net, and his quick pass to Adrian Misaljevic allowed the freshman to use a wrist shot to draw the game back to 3-2 at 4:30.

Three minutes later, JJ Wiebusch scored his fourth goal of the contest, a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Soderwall made an outstanding save, but the rebound found its way to the stick of Wiebusch, who was happy to knock it home at 7:23.

It looked like Penn State was in a position to claim a fifth goal when the Knights went on the penalty kill the fifth time, but Erik Bargholtz gained possession for a breakaway. Bargholtz went in on Penn State netminder Kevin Reidler, using a toe drag and then going to the back hand for a short-handed marker, putting the score at 4-3 at 12:35.

Clarkson tied the game early on in the third period thanks to a smart move from Luka Sukovic. The sophomore forward side-stepped an attempted check and found Owen Van Steensel with a cross-crease feed, knotting the game up at the 1:29 mark in the third stanza. Sukovic earned his second assist of the game and Bryce Sookro added his name to the scoresheet as well.

Near the midway point of the third, the Knights gained the lead for the first time since the opening moments of the contest. On a 3-on-2 break, Ryan Bottrill located Adrian Misaljevic and the first-year recorded his second goal of the contest to put the tally at 5-4.

In the final moments, Reidler was pulled for an extra attacker, but it was Clarkson that would capitalize in the odd-man situation. Bargholtz whipped a shot from his own blue line and found the intended target at the other end of the ice for his second goal of the game and an insurance marker with roughly a minute remaining.

Penn State outshot the Knights 40-26 and Clarkson also added an impressive 21 blocked shots on defense to break up the Nittany Lions offense. All of Clarkson's goals came while either even or down a skater, as the team was 0-for-6 on the power play against the Nittany Lions' 2-for-6 effort while up a skater. Soderwall made 36 stops for the Knights and Reidler made 20 saves for Penn State.
