Knights Short in Four Against Vassar

Potsdam, NY – Maura McAusland of Vassar College and Conley Burns of the Clarkson University Volleyball team dueled with a number of kills for their respective teams, but it was Vassar that would come out on top against the Golden Knights, winning 25-22, 19-25, 25-22, 25-13 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights dropped back to 7-9 overall and 0-3 in the Liberty League, while Vassar moved forward to 12-3 and 2-0. Clarkson will be at home again on Tuesday in search of their first conference win when playing St. Lawrence University.

Vassar got off to a strong start in the opening set and had doubled up the Knights early on 10-5, but Clarkson rattled off five straight to tie the set at 10-10. The Brewers responded with five of the next six to regain the advantage, only to see the Knights hang around and keep things close. The game was tied late at 21 and again at 22, but Vassar picked up two kills from McAusland and then saw the set end on a Clarkson error.

Set two once again was a sprint for Vassar, as the Brewers scored the first five points. It didn't take long for the Knights to come back, tying the set at 7 and then scoring two more to take a 9-7 lead, capped by block assists from Emily Alexander and Jordyn Leader. The two teams seesawed back and forth for a stretch, exchanging the lead several times along with a handful of ties. Clarkson eventually regained the lead at 19-18, but this time scored four more to build a five-point advantage. That was enough cushion for the Knights to outlast the Brewers and tie the match at 1-1.

Neither team could gain much of a foothold in set number-three, at least not until Vassar scored three straight, with the final two as kills from McAusland, to take a 17-12 lead. The Knights responded with three straight kills from Burns to close the gap, but the Brewers had an answer every time the Green and Gold gathered close, maintaining at least a two-point lead the rest of the way.

Although the fourth set was close at the start, Vassar's offense hummed along throughout the game, putting together a .412 hitting percentage (16-2-34) in the final game and cruising to a double-digit win.

Conley Burns recorded 18 kills and eight digs, including a pair of kills that blistered Vassar defenders in the second and third sets. Olivia Baxter notched 23 digs and a pair of aces and Ashley Currier posted 27 assists, 17 digs, and three block assists. Emily Alexander added nine kills and four block assists, while Ainslie Reimer picked up five block assists and Jordyn Leader produced four more block assists for the Knights.

Maura McAusland had a solid all-around day for Vassar with 22 kills, 14 digs, and three aces. Holland Kaplan added a double-double of her own with 14 kills and 15 digs. Francesca Medrano recorded 42 assists and 22 digs and Ellie Kogan had 13 digs and seven assists.
