CU Golf Preview - Clarkson Invitational (9/3)

As is the case every year, the Clarkson University Golf team will have a quick turn-around from its opening tournament of the season, as the Golden Knights will play their third competitive round in four days when the team hosts the Clarkson Invitational Tuesday at Potsdam Town & Country Club.

The Golden Knights will be joined by other local teams in the one-day event, as SUNY Canton and St. Lawrence will travel up Route 11 for the tournament, and Oswego State will make the trek from Central New York.

The Team: A year ago, first-year collegians Jace Dutch and Eric Spoth each shot 73 at the Clarkson Invitational, tying for third among 40 golfers in the event. They were joined in the top 10 by Andrew Palmatier (tied for fifth with a 74), Aaron Walsh (tied for seventh with a 75), and Daniel Wilson (tied for ninth with a 76). Surprisingly, Ryan Makowski shot 82, his worst round of the year, something that is unlikely to be repeated on Tuesday on what is now a very familiar golf course. Makowski had just two rounds above 80 in his freshman season, and he is coming off a first-place showing at the St. Lawrence Invitational this past weekend, in which he scored a one-under to top the leaderboard by four strokes.

Palmatier has averaged a score of 77.67 strokes over 18 holes in three past Clarkson Invitationals, while Aaron Walsh (78.5) and Brant Bomberger (78.5) have also had solid showings. Dylan Farr is the only other current Clarkson Golf team member to have played in the Clarkson Invitational more than twice, and he has averaged 81.33 strokes per 18.
