Makowski and Spoth In Top Half After Day One of Liberty League Championships

Verona, NY - Freshman Ryan Makowski started off slow but quickly found a groove on Friday as he headlined the Clarkson University Golf team's performance on the first day of the Liberty League Championships, held at par-72, 6763-yard Shenendoah Golf Course at Turning Stone Resort. 

The Golden Knights are sixth overall among seven teams with a score of 306 after 18 holes, two behind New York University, five short of Rensselaer, and 10 shy of University of Rochester. The teams will play round two on Saturday, beginning at 12:00 noon. 

Makowski is tied for 13th through the first round, scoring a 75. He had a triple on the first hole, but settled in shortly thereafter, recording 11 pars and three birdies on the day. He had a birdie on the par-four sixth hole, a birdie on the par-five 10th hole, and a birdie on the par-four 16th hole, scoring 38 on the front and 37 on the back. Eric Spoth had a similar round but was short a birdie, scoring a 76 to tie for 15th. He also had 11 pars and recorded birdies on two par-fours, the seventh and 16th holes. 

Andrew Palmatier is in the middle of the pack, tied for 20th after a 77 on day one. He had nine pars and also picked up birdies on two par-fours, the fifth and seventh holes. Daniel Wilson rounded out Clarkson's day one tally with a 78, putting him in a tie for 26th. Wilson had trouble on the front nine with a 43, but came back with a 35 on the back nine, which included six pars and birdies on the 13th and 16th holes. Aaron Walsh's score of 85 was dropped from the team score, as he finished his round with nine pars.
