Knights Split Doubleheader with SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Junior Devin Fitzpatrick tossed a four-hitter in the opener and added a solo home run to her cause as the Clarkson University Softball team split its doubleheader against SUNY Potsdam, winning the first game before losing the nightcap 10-3 at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights will head to Florida with a record of 3-1. Clarkson plays its first doubleheader in Central Florida on Saturday, competing in five doubleheaders over the course of six days. SUNY Potsdam moved to 3-5 on the year.

In the first game, Fitzpatrick opened the scoring with a leadoff home run to straight away center field in the bottom of the second, hitting the ball on a line to put the Knights up 1-0. Clarkson would add another run in the inning, sparked by Elizabeth Greco reaching on an infield single. Molly Pezzano singled up the middle to put Greco in scoring position and another infield hit by Isabel Haspil sent Greco home for a 2-0 Clarkson lead.

The Knights added another run in the bottom of the third as Katy Aldous walked, stole second, and moved to third on a fly out to right. Bridget Kerwin then singled her in to put the tally at 3-0. In the fifth, Clarkson tacked on three runs to put the game away. Fitzpatrick singled to left and was replaced by pinch-runner Elissa Uveino. Kerwin singled, and Greco followed with a single up the middle to plate Uveino. An RBI ground out from Kaya Johnson scored Kerwin and Pezzano's infield single sent Greco home to put the tally at 6-0. Potsdam would score an unearned run in the top of the sixth, but did not challenge in the seventh.

Fitzpatrick finished with nine strikeouts against just four hits in seven innings, not allowing any walks and just a single unearned run. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate, and was joined by Kerwin, Greco, and Pezzano as hitters with multi-hit games.

In game two, Potsdam scored a run in the top of the first on a double by Anna Grottola, which plated Kaylee Dobransky, who had led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Clarkson responded with three in the bottom of the first. Katy Aldous reached on an error and advanced to third on a passed ball and stolen base. Devin Fitzpatrick then walked to put runners on the corners, and Bridget Kerwin followed with a single to left-center to tie the game. Elizabeth Greco then followed with a two-run double to left-center to put Clarkson up 3-1.

Both pitchers settled in for the next few innings without any more runs being scored until the fifth. The Bears scratched one run across in the fifth as Kaylee LaForest singled in pinch-runner Alivia Dean, and an inning later Dobransky's triple to right scored Emily Beck to tie the game. Potsdam then opened the game up in the seventh, scoring seven runs on seven hits in the frame. Most of those hits were seeing-eye singles that just squeaked through the infield, sometimes drawn in to cut down runners at the plate, but they came with enough frequency that Clarkson found itself in a hole from which it could not recover.

Sierra Ashley finished with the win for Potsdam, tossing seven frames and giving up three hits with three walks while striking out seven. Lily Corrice took the loss, with most of the damage coming in the seventh frame.
