Sawyer Posts Top Time and Finish for CU Cross Country at NCAA Mideast Regionals

Waterford, CT – Senior Riley Sawyer and sophomore Alexandra Simon posted the best finishes for the Clarkson University Cross Country team on Saturday as the Golden Knights competed in the NCAA Mideast Regionals, hosted by Connecticut College at Harkness Memorial State Park.

The Golden Knights' men were in the middle of the pack, taking 12th of 24 teams with 386 points while the women ended up in 23rd place among 24 squads with 720 points.

Sawyer continued the trend of dropping significant time off his races, finishing the 8000-meter course in 26 minutes, 22 seconds, putting him in 53rd place among 172 total runners with a time that was more than 40 seconds faster than any of his teammates. Classmate Tyler Nickels was next to cross the finish line for the Knights, coming in 79th place in 27:04.5. The gap between Sawyer and Nickels compared to Nickels and the next Clarkson runner was microscopic, as sophomore Drew Reigelsperger was just eight-tenths of a second behind his teammate with a time of 27:05.3, coming in 80th. Two freshmen rounded out Clarkson's scoring five. Frank Consolazio was 84th in 27:12.7 and James Lynch was next in the 94th spot with a time of 27:35.6. Clarkson's final two runners both finished inside the top 120 runners as Kaleb Swartley took 102nd in 27:48.2 and Caleb Tribotte was 112th in 28:00.1.

On the women's side, Alexandra Simon had her best time of the season, challenging the 25-minute mark with a finish of 25:19.0 in the 6000-meter race, placing 125th out of 179 competitors in the field. Classmate Skylar Francis was next for the Knights about 50 seconds later, taking 139th with a time of 26:07.3. The rest of Clarkson's runners finished between 162nd place and 176th place but separated somewhat more in time. Megan Edwards was third among Clarkson runners (162) with a time of 28:19.2, Kylie Nowicki was fourth (164) in 28:41.1, and Kelly Lahiff closed out the Clarkson scoring group by taking 165th overall in 29:14.8. Clarkson's additional runners outside of the team scoring were  Elizabeth Kraynak (30:48.9) and Meilin Lamanna (31:51.5), placing 174th and 176th, respectively.
