Knights Stay Among List of Unbeatens After 1-1 Tie at SLU

Canton, NY – A couple of streaks ended for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team on Wednesday afternoon against St. Lawrence University, but one continued as the Golden Knights remained unbeaten with a 1-1 tie in Liberty League action at Sandy McAllister Field.

The Green and Gold saw their record go to 5-0-6 overall and 1-0-3 in conference games as the team had its third straight conference tie. St. Lawrence pushed its mark to 4-2-3 overall and 1-0-2.

Clarkson allowed its first goal in 335 minutes to end its three-game shutout streak, but at the same time the Knights scored their first goal in a stretch of nearly 288 minutes, following two scoreless shutouts in league play. Additionally, Clarkson's 11-game unbeaten streak to begin the season is one short of tying the program record, accomplished in the 1993 season and also crossing over two seasons in 1988-89.

St. Lawrence's best opportunities at the start of the contest were missed connections on passes and shots that went wide, while the shots that were on target were easily corralled by Clarkson keeper Carter Kladstrup. The one shot for the Knights in the first 10 minutes by Josh Conklin went wide of the left post.

The Saints' pressure ended a long scoreless defensive run by Clarkson with under 15 minutes to go. Clarkson was unable to clear the ball over the half, allowing St. Lawrence to maintain possession and pressure on the Knights. Max Mogul carried the ball in on the right side, getting a step inside the penalty area from about 12 yards out. He sent a pass in front to Baker Diaz, and his one touch chipped past Kladstrup at 31:44 for the opening score of the game.

Clarkson responded less than six minutes later on a surprising turn of events. St. Lawrence goalkeeper George Charalambous kicked the ball from his own end, but the attempted pass was picked up by the Knights' defense at roughly 40 yards away. From there, Daniel Medina sent a ball back towards the Saints' keeper, with enough pace on it to be a shot but also an attempt at a through ball. While Charalambous initially made the save and Medina threw up his hands in disgust, Zach Shufelt continued his run towards the net. When Charalambous juggled the ball and it squirted out of his grasp, Shufelt finished the play at 37:03, tying the score 1-1.

The second half didn't see many scoring opportunities for either team. Clarkson had a soft header midway through the half from Paul Rolland, but that was caught by the Saints' keeper. At the other end, a hard shot from the top of the box was denied by Kladstrup as the only real chances for either team.

Finally, with about five minutes to go, Clarkson had a corner kick opportunity that itself didn't amount to much, but the ensuing possession by the Knights saw the ball bound around the box before it was finally cleared over the woodwork.

The Saints ended the game with an 18-11 edge in shots and a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. St. Lawrence also had seven corner kick chances to Clarkson's three. Kladstrup made a season-best eight saves for the Knights, while Charalambous made four stops for St. Lawrence.
