Wong's Second Half Goal Puts Knights On Top 1-0 at Morrisville

Morrisville, NY – A number of close calls could have seen the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team come away with a lopsided win, but instead a shot from 30 yards out off a rebound turned out to be the game-winner, as the Golden Knights claimed a 1-0 win over Morrisville State on Wednesday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 1-1 on the season while the Mustangs saw their record fall to 0-3 overall.

Clarkson's goal from Tayte Wong in the 66th minute ended a run of near misses in the second half. Clarkson's first solid scoring chance came in the first few minutes when Logan Drake's hard shot from about 20 yards out was denied by Morrisville goalkeeper Caleb Lucero with a diving save to his right. The Knights went another 20 minutes without a true scoring opportunity as a free kick was punched out by Lucero only to find the foot of Jack Donnelly, whose quick one-timer shot went just high of the frame. With three minutes left in the first half, a corner kick chance was headed off the post by Jay Jezioro.

Jezioro had a solid chance early in the second half, but his shot was wide of the far post, and 10 minutes later Nolan Grady had a near copycat miss. Clarkson's frustration finally ended in the 66th minute as Colin Wright began the play with a free kick from the right side of the field. Wright's ball was put into the box and bounced out when Lucero slid to kick the ball way out. Tayte Wong's reaction was faster than the Mustangs' defense, as he retrieved the loose ball about 25 yards out and sent a hard grounder that appeared to tick the toe of a few players on its way through traffic, skipping past Lucero to give Clarkson a 1-0 advantage.

Clarkson finished the contest with a 15-6 edge in shots, and a 7-2 lead in shots on goal, though none of the Morrisville shots challenged Golden Knights' goalkeeper Carter Kladstrup as his two saves came in the way of a trickling slow grounder and a shot from 35 yards out that he caught at his chest with no other pressure around him. The Knights also had a 5-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
