Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Knights Drop Season Finale to RPI, 18-13

Potsdam, NY – Junior Madelynn Barnum scored six goals and senior Julia Lavarnway recorded five points, but their efforts were not enough for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team as the Golden Knights couldn't keep pace with Rensselaer, falling 18-13 in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights concluded their 2023 season with a record of 8-9 overall and 3-7 in conference games, while RPI improved to 11-4 and 6-4.

Clarkson's offense started off a little sluggish and had just one goal in the first 20-plus minutes, falling in an early 5-1 hole. Midway through the second quarter, Barnum scored twice and Julia Lavarnway dropped her stick down to score at the 4:00 mark to put the tally at 5-4. However, RPI responded with three goals in the final three minutes to head into the locker room with an 8-5 advantage.

Clarkson chipped away several times in the third, getting within two after Hailey Millington's goal at 8:59 and trailing by three when Sofie Mangino found the back of the net with 4:29 remaining, but the Engineers went on a 6-0 run after Mangino's score. RPI scored three to close out the third and then put up three more at the start of the fourth for an 18-9 edge. Clarkson closed the gap with goals from Barnum and Lauren Shanahan, drawing within six with just under five minutes to go, but the Knights were only able to score one more time in the waning seconds.

Barnum finished with six goals, four draw controls and two caused turnovers and Julia Lavarnway had five points on two goals and three assists while also causing two turnovers. Lauren Shanahan had a pair of goals, seven draws, six groundballs, and two caused turnovers, and Ryle Ganter also caused three turnovers.

For RPI, Rylie Maready had seven points on three goals and four assists and was tough on draw controls, winning 12. Ella Graf and Lauren DeLeo each had five points on four goals and an assist, while Megan Shay also tossed in four goals, six draws, and two caused turnovers.

Clarkson held a small advantage in shots (32-30), but RPI was up in shots on goal (25-21). Olivia McGill stopped eight shots for RPI and Jennaca McGill made seven saves for the Knights.

Both Barnum and Lavarnway challenged a handful of single-season standards at Clarkson in 2023. Barnum's six goals put her at 49 for the year, tied for fifth most in program history. Lavarnway's 47 assists were just two shy of Clarkson's one-year record and her 71 points were the sixth highest figure in program history.
