Knights Back on Winning Track with 67-62 Victory Over SUNY Poly

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Raelin Burns scored a collegiate-high 16 points, including a 3-for-6 effort from beyond the 3-point arc, to help lead the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a 67-62 defeat over SUNY Poly in non-league action Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights improved to 3-5 on the year, while the Wildcats fell to 4-7. Clarkson returns to Liberty League action this weekend when the team hosts Vassar College and Bard College.

Clarkson led for all but a 30-second stretch in the second quarter and held a small advantage for the remainder of the contest. The Knights jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first four minutes, causing the Wildcats to take a timeout, and though the break jumpstarted SUNY Poly's offense, Clarkson still led by seven with two-plus minutes to go in the period. A 5-0 run to end the quarter, capped by a 3-pointer from the corner by Lyrik Jackson, pulled SUNY Poly to within two after the first 10 minutes.

At the start of the second, Raelin Burns hit a 3-pointer and Clarkson led by at least a possession for most of the third quarter. A pair of free throws from Lauren Denny at 2:43 put SUNY Poly up by a point, but the lead was brief as Cassidy Dumont hit a jumper at the other end to help the Knights regain the lead, beginning an 8-0 run in a stretch of 90 seconds.

In the third, the Wildcats again got within one, only to see the Knights go on a 10-0 streak in three minutes, finished off by a Burns 3-pointer from the wing as time expired on the shot clock. The Knights led by nine at the end of the third quarter, but Clarkson's offense went quiet at the start of the fourth, with SUNY Poly chipping away with makes inside and free throws. The margin was briefly cut to three, but the Knights broke through with makes from the free throw line from Mariah Benavides and Elaina Porter. A 3-pointer from Molly Burdick with just under two minutes remaining drew the Wildcats to within two, but Clarkson countered with a jumper from Cassidy Dumont and held at least a four-point lead for the remainder of the contest.

Dumont finished with 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting, while Burns was 6-for-9 from the field for 16 points. Veronica Tache chipped in 10 points, and Elaina Porter was just short of a double-double on nine points and nine rebounds.

For SUNY Poly, Molly Burdick shot 13-for-26 from the field for a game-high 29 points while also grabbing 14 rebounds. Lyrik Jackson also tossed in 21 points and snagged eight rebounds, as the duo of Burdick and Jackson accounted for more than 80% of the team's points.
