Barnum Nets Eight As Knights Open Liberty League Play with 20-15 Win at RIT

Rochester, NY – Sophomore midfielder Madelynn Barnum scored eight goals on all eight of her shots on the frame as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team opened up Liberty League play with a 20-15 victory over RIT on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League while RIT went to 2-4 and 1-1 in conference games. Clarkson will be at Plattsburgh State on Tuesday before going back to Liberty League games against William Smith and Ithaca next weekend.

The Green and Gold opened the game with seven goals in the first 14 minutes while limiting RIT to just one score, despite holding just a 17-12 advantage in shots in the opening quarter. Barnum converted three times, one even-strength, one man-up, and one free-position, in the first six minutes, and then added another goal at the tail end of the quarter.

RIT got back into the contest in the second quarter, scoring twice on free-position shots early on and then getting back-to-back goals from Aldyn Savage to reduce the margin to 8-5. A late score from Barnum put Clarkson up 9-5 at the break.

The Tigers continued to chip away at the start of the second half, but Clarkson's offense responded with another gear offensively. After RIT pulled to within two at 9-7, Julia Lavarnway scored at the 10:04 mark, only 30 seconds after the Tigers' second third quarter goal. Sydney Roderick them scored 34 seconds after Lavarnway, helping the Knights maintain at least a three-goal lead for much of the quarter. In the final minutes of quarter, Barnum and Lavarnway again converted to help the Knights return their advantage to six goals.

Clarkson enjoyed a strong run of scoring midway through the fourth quarter to put the game away, as Lavarnway scored twice along with goals from Roderick and Barnum, making a five-goal lead turn into a nine-goal advantage with 4:20 remaining. RIT scored four late goals, but the deficit was far too large to overcome.

Barnum scored eight times on 12 total shots, eight on the goal, and also added two groundballs and four draw controls. Julia Lavarnway added seven points on six goals and an assist, and Roderick also chipped in three goals and a pair of assists. Mia Petrone scored twice and contributed seven draw controls while Grace Hagberg also had two points, two draws, and two caused turnovers. McKenzie Tikalsky played well on the defensive end, causing two turnovers and scooping up five groundballs.

For RIT, Colette Rigas scored six times and caused two turnovers, and Aldyn Save had five points to go along with 10 draws.

In the creases, Sydney Christiansen made seven saves for the Golden Knights, while RIT split time between two goalies. Linda Nutter started but allowed five goals without a save, and Victoria Rea came on in relief to stop nine shots.
