Knights Back On Winning Track with 2-0 Victory Over Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – First-half goals from Colin Wright and Bobby Guilfoil proved the difference as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team finished off the home portion of its 2022 schedule with a 2-0 victory over SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-3-3 overall and head into the weekend with playoff aspirations when they take on Rensselaer. Potsdam saw its season end at 5-8-4.

The Knights controlled play in the early minutes, getting a handful of attempts both on goal and just wide. That pressure eventually resulted in a goal midway through the half. Clarkson possessed the ball in its own defensive with space just on the other side of the center line, and Christian Silvano served a ball deep down the left line. Potsdam's defense won the first ball in the air and tried to get a second, but Colin Wright was able to sneak past to get possession down near the goal line. He then took a few touches and closed ground before taking a tough right-footed shot that landed just inside the post for a 1-0 Clarkson lead at 21:57.

Less than twelve minutes later, Clarkson picked up its second goal of the contest. Clarkson was holding possession after a corner kick and a long pass went over the top where Taro Hayashi was able to corral the ball. He then returned the ball back to the other side, where it was missed on its first bounce before finding the foot of Bobby Guilfoil. He then settled the ball and was able to turn with a hard left-footed shot that ended up inside the near post at 33:20.

In the first 45 minutes, Clarkson outshot the Bears 9-5, but the margin in shots on goal was only 6-5. Corners were also close, with Clarkson having a 5-4 advantage.

Potsdam came out a little stronger in the second half, and eventually had a very good chance when Clarkson was whistled for a foul in the box on a push in the back. Anderson Velasquez took his chance and went hard with his right foot to the left post, but Josh Morelli was up to the task, diving to his right and securing the ball to keep there from being a second scoring opportunity. Each team had a handful more chances, but the best opportunities tended to sail high or wide.

Clarkson ended with a 15-10 advantage in shots and a 10-7 lead in shots on goal, while the margin on corners remained at one (6-5). Josh Morelli stopped seven shots for his fourth shutout of the year, while Ian Schwartz denied eight for the Bears.
