Clarkson and Vassar Finish Knotted in 1-1 Tie

Potsdam, NY – Two goals separated by less than eight minutes midway through the second half caused momentum to swing both ways, but the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team and Vassar College finished in a 1-1 tie in Liberty League action Friday afternoon at Hantz Field.

Clarkson picked up its third tie in league play, moving to 7-2-3 overall and 1-2-3 in the Liberty League, while the Brewers remained unbeaten in conference games at 3-0-2 while going to 7-3-2 overall. The Golden Knights will take on Bard College on Saturday as the program celebrates its seniors and graduate students.

Vassar carried the play initially and had an early chance when a ball glanced off the post and went out of bounds, but the Brewers other two shots on goal in the first half were denied by Clarkson goalkeeper Josh Morelli well away from the frame. After the first 10 or so minutes, Clarkson began to take control and also had a pair of good scoring opportunities in the first half, as a cross went through two diving Knights trying to get a touch. Later on, Michael Lanfear's soft shot in traffic go through a defender and the Vassar goalkeeper, but another defender was able to race to the end line and kick the ball away.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard first as Logan Drake got possession deep in Vassar's end and sent a hard cross over the heads of the Vassar defense and James Nicholas came in to finish off the play at 52:23. The Knights would only have the lead for a shot while as the Brewers were able to convert off a corner kick in the 61st minute as Duncan Keker knocked in Kinlay Watkins' service with a header in the middle near the top of the six.

The goal reinvigorated Vassar for the final stretch of the game as the Brewers got a slew of corner kick chances, but Vassar was unable to convert or really get any good shots off from those opportunities.

The two teams were close in shots, with Vassar holding narrow edges in total attempts (11-9) and shots on goal (5-4). The Brewers did hold a 10-2 edge in corner kick chances, getting many repeat attempts in bunches. Josh Morelli finished with four saves for the Knights, and Eric Wnorowski made two stops for Vassar.
