Knights Pick Up First Win of 2022 with Double-Overtime Victory Over Plattsburgh

Potsdam, NY - With both teams shorthanded, double overtime was the last thing anyone wanted, but the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team was able to outlast Plattsburgh State in two extra sessions to claim its first win of the season, defeating the Cardinals 81-75 on Monday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-8 on the year and Plattsburgh fell to 3-7. Clarkson will hit the road this weekend for conference games at Vassar College and Bard College.

Clarkson opened the contest with six points in less than two minutes and led throughout the first quarter. An eight-point lead (15-7) near the midway point of the period was cut to two as the Cardinals went on an 8-2 run to close out the period. Plattsburgh tied the game early in the second quarter on free throws, but the Knights scored six straight to again earn a comfy cushion, and finished off the half with a four-point advantage when Cassidy Dumont scored in the waning seconds of the period.

Plattsburgh took its first lead of the game with 3:25 remaining in the third when Kayla Doody hit a 3-ointer from the corner, and the Cardinals extended their advantage to as many as six. Clarkson would not wilt, coming back in the fourth quarter thanks to key baskets from Elaina Porter, to put the Knights up by four. Clarkson still held that margin with just over two minutes to go, but a clutch 3-pointer from Doody with 19 seconds to go tied the game.

Both teams had the opportunity to put the game away late, but Lauren Bell was able to make just one of her two free throws and at the other end Payton Couture also could convert on only one of her two free throws with 0.7 seconds left, sending the game to overtime.

In the first overtime, it appeared as if Plattsburgh would come away with the win. The Cardinals scored the first five points, including a step-back 3-pointer from Hope Sullivan with just under two minutes to go. Lauren Bell cashed in on the interior and Cassidy Dumont followed up with a 3-pointer to tie the game in the final minute. Again, the Cardinals looked like they might earn the win as Sullivan scored with less than six seconds to go. Once Clarkson advanced the ball, Cassidy Dumont inbounded to begin the play and found herself open on the opposite side of the court where she banked in a layup as time expired, forcing a second overtime.

The second extra session was more in Clarkson's favor as Dumont scored a pair of baskets and Tache made a free throw to put the Knights up by seven. Plattsburgh trimmed the margin to two when Sullivan scored in the final minute, but Kailey Johnson was able to break out when the Cardinals put on a full-court press, and her basket in open space proved to be the key basket in giving Clarkson its first win of the season.

Only 15 players in total were in uniform for the game, as Cassidy Dumont scored 29 points and chipped in five assists and three steals in a full 50 minutes of playing time. Elaina Porter also never came off the court, recording a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Lauren Bell had 12 points and 19 boards before fouling out, while both Maddie Pratt (10 points, eight rebounds) and Veronica Tache (nine points, eight rebounds) were just short of double-doubles.

For Plattsburgh, Hope Sullivan scored 20 points and had nine rebounds in a full 50 minutes, while Payton Couture notched 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kayla Doody also added 15 points off the bench and Kanesha Strider scored 11 for the Cardinals.
