Knights Earn First Conference Win with 68-56 Victory Over Bard

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY - Junior Mariah Benavides scored a team-high 19 points, including a key 3-pointer down the stretch, to help lift the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team to a 68-56 victory over Bard College in Liberty League action Tuesday evening.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-9 on the season and picked up their first victory in conference play, moving to 1-4 in Liberty League contests. Bard dropped to 1-8 and 0-4. Clarkson is scheduled to play seven straight league games at home, staying in Potsdam for the remainder of January.

Clarkson started the game with the first five points in just a minute of play and held a small advantage for much of the first quarter. Bard finally caught up and briefly took the lead late in the period after a Christina Kiser layup and free throw with 1:04 remaining, but a Lauryn Withrow jumper with 45 seconds to go had the teams tied through the first 10 minutes. In the second period, Bard took a five-point after a Mae Redmond 3-pointer at 6:48, but Clarkson battled back to regain teh lead on a Ruthie Nolan make at the 4:12 mark. Kiser then converted at the other end to put Bard back up, only to see Clarkson end the half on a 9-0 run, capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers from Ruthie Nolan and Mariah Benavides.

At the start of the second half, the Knights expanded their lead to as many as 10 points, but Bard began chipping away at the gap and eventually reduced it to five at the end of 30 minutes. The Raptors rallied at the beginning of the fourth quarter and eventually made it all the way back to tie the game 50-50 after a Kiser layup at the 5:59 mark. However, Cassidy Dumont hit a 3-pointer at the other end to return the lead to the Knights and Clarkson would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.

The key point in the contest came late in the fourth. With Clarkson up by just two, Lauren Bell drew a foul on the inside and headed to the line for pair of free throws. Bell made the first and missed the second, but Lauryn Withrow was able to cause a tie-up on the rebound and was awarded with the rebound on a jump ball. Clarkson took advantage of the extra possession as once the ball was worked to Bell on the block, she whipped a pass back out to the top of the key where Benavides was waiting, and the junior buried a 3-pointer to put Clarkson up by six. From that point on, the Knights were able to convert mostly free throws to hold off the Raptors.

Benavides scored 19 points on 5-for-9 shooting while Bell also shot 5-for-9, scoring 13 points and adding in eight rebounds. For Bard, Christina Kiser scored 34 points and also added five boards, six assists, and three steals. Kiser was 10-for-22 from the floor and 12-for-13 at the free throw line. Olivia Couture also chipped in 10 points and nine boards for the Raptors.
