Ithaca Ends Clarkson's Two-Game Win Streak in 1-0 Conference Opener

Potsdam, NY – Back at home for the first time in three weeks, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team came up short in its first conference game of 2021, as Ithaca College used an early going to come away with a 1-0 win over the Golden Knights at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 2-4-2 overall and 0-1-0 in league play, while Ithaca moved to 3-4-3 and 1-0-0. Clarkson will be back in action next Saturday at conference foe RIT.

Clarkson controlled the possession for most of the first 15 minutes, but it was Ithaca that was able to get on the board early. Off a throw in near the middle of the Clarkson defensive zone, the ball bounced around a bit before a cross moved into the six to put pressure on the Knights' defense. Clarkson cleared the ball outward off a header, but Ithaca's Connor Tierney was able to get possession near the top of the penalty area. Tierney had two Clarkson defenders on him and had his back to the goal, but did a quick turn and lofted a shot with his right foot into the top of the net at 13:20.

A few minutes later, the Knights looked like they might score the equalizer. Two Clarkson players had attempts right near the goal line, with some believing the ball might have crossed over, but the rush was cleared by the Ithaca defense. Some 20 minutes later, Joon Bang also had a chance on the Ithaca frame, only to see his attempt denied by Lee Folger in the 39th minute.

In the first few minutes of the second half, each team's goalkeeper made a save, but those were the only shots that were taken for nearly 30 more minutes. Clarkson had a handful of shots in the final 10 minutes, but none found their desired spot and the Knights fell short in finding the game-tying goal.

Clarkson ended up with a 9-5 edge in shots, though shots on goal were even at 3-3. Clarkson also tripled up Ithaca in corner chances, taking six chances to the Bombers' two. Folger made three saves for Ithaca and Bryan Benitez made two stops for the Knights.
