Knights Score Late for 1-0 Win Over SUNY Potsdam

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore transfer Simon Falck scored in the 81st minute to break a scoreless tie and lift the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team to a 1-0 victory over crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam Wednesday evening.

The Golden Knights moved to 1-3-2 while Potsdam fell to 1-2-2. Clarkson will head to Vermont on Saturday for a neutral site match against New England College at Applejack Stadium.

After a fairly even scoreless first half, the two teams traded quick counters in the second. Each team had a solid scoring chance in the 62nd minute. A direct kick off a yellow provided the Golden Knights with a three-on-three run that took the ball deep into the Potsdam defensive zone where a drop pass near the penalty stripe would likely have ended up in a goal, but the ball missed its mark and Potsdam went the other way. The Bears challenged at the other end just a handful of second later, with a shot off the foot of Rafael Castro going wide right.

Clarkson had the next four shots over the following 18 minutes, with the last of the group resulting in a goal. The Knights brought the ball deep down the left side line, and a cross found its way to the far right of penalty area and was seemingly cleared by a Potsdam defender. However, Simon Falck took the clear attempt off the top of his chest about 15 yards away and quickly settled it, taking one step forward and hitting a hard shot with his right foot to opposite corner of the goal, breaking the scoreless tie at 80:52.

The Knights were able to keep Potsdam from mounting much pressure offensively for the remainder of the game, controlling play and keeping the ball in the Bears' defensive zone for much of the final 10 minutes. Potsdam was able to get only one shot off in the waning moments, a desperation kick from 35 yards out that was easily captured by Clarkson goalkeeper Bryan Benitez as the horn sounded.

Clarkson finished with an 11-8 edge in shots, though Potsdam had more attempts on frame (4-2). The Knights also led in corner kick opportunities, 4-1. Benitez made four saves for the shutout, while Conor Callan denied one shot for the Bears.
