Miles-Ferguson Scores 20 in Return but Knights Fall to Messiah

Mechanicsburg, PA – A cold spell in the second half turned a close game into one with a double-figure margin, as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team opened its season with a 69-57 loss to Messiah on Friday evening.

The Golden Knights will take on Coast Guard Academy in the Consolation Game of the Towneplace Suites Tip-Off Tournament, beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson started off slow from beyond the 3-point arc, missing its first five chances from deep before Ryan Miles-Ferguson made one at the 15:29 mark. Things remained slow for the Golden Knights' offense for the first 12 minutes, but Clarkson started rolling late, scoring frequently in the final five minutes of the half. Blake Gearhart hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at 4:25 and Miles-Ferguson hit another with just 46 seconds left to pull the Knights within two at the break (32-20).

Dante Joefield opened the second half with a 3-pointer from the elbow extended to put Clarkson up for the first time since the early minutes of the first half, but Messiah quickly responded and regained its advantage. Clarkson stayed close over the next few minutes and trailed by just one when Miles-Ferguson made a layup at 17:14. However, the Knights went cold over the next eight minutes, missing 11 straight shots before a Chris Hulbert 3-pointer rattled home at 9:28. Over that span, the Knights scored a pair of points on free throws, but Messiah was able to extend its one-point lead to 17 (56-39) prior to Hulbert's 3-pointer.

Although the Knights did fall back behind by 19, the Hulbert 3-pointer got Clarkson going over the next few minutes, with Gearhart hitting a 3-pointer and immediately following that up with a steal and fast break layup to cut the margin to 12 (63-51). Messiah began using as much of the shot clock as possible in an attempt to limit the Knights' chances. Miles-Ferguson hit a 3-pointer and a layup in quick succession to get Clarkson within 10 at 2:09, but the Falcons were able to play keep-away enough in the waning moments to hold on for the win.

Ryan Miles-Ferguson finished a rebound short of a double-double scoring 20 points to go along with nine rebounds, all on the defensive end, in his first game back since sitting out last season. Hulbert and Gearhart each chipped in 11 points and Dante Joefield added eight points for the Knights.

For Messiah, Will Young had 19 points on 8-for-15 shooting as well as 12 rebounds. Matt Glogowski added 12 points on 6-for-9 shooting and Tyler Penley scored 11 on just five shots.
