Two Quick Goals Give Knights 2-1 Win at Bard

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – Two goals separated by less than 20 seconds in the early going gave the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team a 2-1 victory over Bard College in Liberty League action Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-7-2 overall and 2-4-0 in the Liberty League, while Bard fell to 4-8-0 and 0-6-0 in conference games. Clarkson has three conference games remaining on the 2021 schedule, including next Saturday's contest against Union College at Hantz Field.

Clarkson got on the scoreboard early. Less than nine minutes into to the contest, the Knights created a quick break off a throw-in to score the first goal of the contest. Beginning some 70 yards away from the goal, the throw found Bobby Guilfoil and a quick pass to Mack Walton at midfield got things moving. Walton found Zachary Appel in space a few steps over the center line and he carried the ball forward with some quick touches before sending the ball deep into the far corner to James Nicholas. With the ball near the end line, Nicholas passed the ball back in front to Nolan Grady, who hit the ball with solid pace with his left foot to the opposite post, where Walton was able to tip it past the goalkeeper at 8:40 to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead.

The Knights may have caught Bard sleeping a bit on the ensuing kick-off, as the Raptors played the ball backwards only to find Clarkson putting immediate pressure on the ball. Clarkson gained control and Appel again quarterbacked the play by sending a pass forward to Guilfoil in space. With one defender in front and another trailing to put more pressure on the senior, Guilfoil, moved back into the center of the field and hit a hard shot with his left foot, scoring to the far post just 17 seconds after Clarkson first got on the board.

After scoring on its first two shots of the game, the Knights were somewhat quiet following the goals, going without a shot on goal for the next 26-plus minutes until Jack Donnelly put one on the frame early in the 36th minute.

Clarkson hung on to its two-goal lead until late in the second half, when Bard finally broke through. With less than 13 minutes remaining, a foul resulted in a free kick by Caleb Ribeiro, and his pass found the head of Reed Campbell in the box at 77:27 to cut the margin to one. However, the Raptors would get just one more shot in the final 12-plus minutes and Clarkson goalkeeper Bryan Benitez was up to the task to keep the game at 2-1.

Clarkson held small leads in shots (14-10) and shots on goal (7-5) while each team had four corner kick opportunities. Benitez finished with four saves and Gavin Hersey made five stops for the Raptors.
