Clarkson Softball Splits Season-Opening Twinbill in Maryland

Salisbury, MD – Playing 10 innings in its season-opening doubleheader, the Clarkson University Softball team found itself on the short side of one run-ruled game and on the winning end of another, dropping its first contest 11-1 to Salisbury and then downing Oneonta State 10-2 in game two Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights will be back in action on Sunday when they face both squads once again, playing Oneonta State at 10:00 am and then facing Salisbury at 12:00 noon.

In the opener, the Gulls played the role of visitor in the series, and jumped out to an early lead with four runs before Clarkson got an at bat. Dakotah Fraley singled to center to lead off the game and came around on a home run by Kaleigh Edwards to make the score 2-0. A few batters later, Lauren Meyers delivered a two-run single for a 4-0 Salisbury lead. Fraley struck for a two-run homer in the top of the second to make it 6-0, but Clarkson rallied back for a run in the bottom of the inning. Kyrstin Messier singled and moved to third on a pass ball and ground out, scoring on a two-out single to right by Olivia Zoeller.

Salisbury tacked on four runs in the top of the third with Sami Mumford singling in a run, Fraley driving in a run with a double, and two more coming around on errors. The Gulls got one more run in the fourth thanks to a throwing error.

Clarkson had five hits spread among five players in the first game, as Danielle Whitham was the only player to reach twice, walking in a pair of plate appearances. Leah Allen took the loss, tossing the first three innings, while Riley Page gave up a single unearned run in two innings of relief. For Salisbury, Lindsey Windsor struck out four in four innings of work for the win, while Fraley was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three more driven in and Mumford went 3-for-3, scoring three times.

The Golden Knights' offense was louder in its second game against Oneonta State. Hannah Bowen started the game with a single to center, stole second, and then moved to third on a throwing error after the steal. Danielle Whitham reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, setting up Michele Winn's run scoring single, with Whitham following Bowen after a miscue in the outfield to make it 2-0. Kyrstin Messier singled home Winn for the inning's third run and came around herself on a sacrifice fly to center by Maddie Brink.

Oneonta picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the first when Jade Meehan reached on an error and found her way around the bases later on a Megan Palmatier single.

Clarkson tallied two more runs in the top of the third with the rally starting after the initial out of the inning. Winn singled to third, Messier reached on an error, and Kayla Robert doubled in both to give Clarkson a 6-1 advantage. Oneonta responded with a run in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with consecutive singles and a walk, allowing a sacrifice fly to push one run across. Clarkson quickly recovered, scoring its first run in the top of the fourth when the bases were loaded with three walks. A wild pitch allowed Hannah Bowen to score, but Messier walked to reload the bases, and Kayla Robert doubled to right to plate two more, with the bases getting reloaded when Maddie Brink received a base on balls. Olivia Zoeller then singled to center to score Clarkson's fourth run of the inning for a 10-2 lead.

Zoeller made sure the eight runs stood up to shorten the game, striking out the side around a bunt single in the fourth and then putting Oneonta down in order in the fifth to end the contest.

Zoeller struck out eight in five innings of work, allowing a single earned run on two walks and five hits. Offensively, Robert was 3-for-3 with four runs batted in, Winn reached on two hits and a walk to score three runs, and Rylee LeBourveau was 2-for-3 at the dish.
