Knights Offense Awakens for Four-Goal Night Versus Canton

Potsdam, NY – Breaking out of a scoring slump, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team scored four goals in the first 31 minutes to remain unbeaten at home as the Golden Knights picked up a 4-0 non-league win Tuesday night at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights evened their record at 3-3 on the season while SUNY Canton fell to 2-3-2. Clarkson will be back on the road this weekend when the squad faces Plattsburgh State.

Although the Knights easily could have been on the scoreboard in the first few minutes, the team still took little time to get on a roll on offense, thanks to some early pressure. As the SUNY Canton goalkeeper attempted to clear the ball out of the defensive zone with a kick off the ground, sophomore Ben Root rushed the attempt and deflected the ball forward, knocking it into an empty net at the 11:26 mark. Just five minutes later, Mack Walton sent a pass through traffic from about 30 yards out to find John Furcick in the open, and the senior did the rest with one quick steadying move and a hard groundball into the net at 16:32.

Walton again found himself the distributor at 20:55 as the Knights made the most of a corner kick opportunity. Walton sent a pass over the play to the far post, where freshman Kyle Jackson volleyed the ball in to put the Knights up 3-0. Less than 10 minutes later, Walton was the beneficiary of a cross from Brandon Bahr, giving Clarkson a 4-0 advantage.

SUNY Canton started strong in the second half, but its attempts on the Clarkson frame were always off target as the second-half goalkeeping combo of Bryan Benitez and Ben Lado combined with starter Ian Roeloffs for the shutout. For Canton, Tyler Peterson made two saves in the first half and Dawson Pellerin made two stops in the second half. Clarkson finished with a 16-10 edge in shots and 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams were saved by the defenders, as Canton had two teams saves in addition to the goalie stops and Clarkson also received a team save when Kyle Jackson kept an errant shot from going over the goal line.
