Only 10 times did a ball get through the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team's defense in 2018, the stingiest rate in the program's 66-year history. Although the Golden Knights lost a few players from that defense, Clarkson looks to couple that strength with an improved offense in hopes of reaching the Liberty League Tournament and beyond in 2019.

The Green and Gold open up with their annual classic style tournament this weekend when the team faces Otterbein University and Springfield College at Hantz Turf Field.

Key Returners: The Knights return more than 75 percent of their scoring punch from a year ago, including the team's top offensive threat Henry Gomez, Jr. With 13 points on six goals and an assist, Gomez, a senior, was the lone player for the Knights to reach double figures in scoring, although his partner on offense Aidan Subra certainly would have enjoyed the opportunity to continue his hot start before an injury felled him in the early going. Subra, also a senior in 2019, played in just five games before getting hurt, but scored nine points on two goals and five assists in that short stretch. Classmate Stephen Klimek chipped in six points on two goals and two assists and juniors Mack Walton (3-2-8) and Matt Adamou (2-2-6) as well as freshman Ben Root (1-3-5) each had their touches on multiple goals for Clarkson in 2018.

Defensively, the Knights will certainly miss Liberty League Defensive Player of the Year James Homan's steady play and offensive contributions (3-0-6), as well as goalkeeper Riley McDonald and Josh Eidem, but the Green and Gold still have experience in the back end. In 2018, the Clarkson defense ranked among the national leaders in goals allowed per game, giving up just 10 scores in 17 contests while allowing a measly 9.5 shots per game and 3.5 corner kick chances per contest. Senior Ian Roeloffs was the team's starting goalkeeper to open the year and helped the squad notch three shutouts in September before missing the final month due to injury. Senior Chris Jupin and juniors Greg Schebece and Brandon Bahr have all seen plenty of pitch time over the years, with Bahr starting all 17 games last year and playing the second-most minutes on the team.

In the midfield, Walton was a conference all-star last season and senior John Furcick has started 48 of the team's 49 games in the last three seasons, contributing heady play on both offense and defense. Adamou and fellow junior Connor O'Brien will also contribute quality minutes, as will senior Erick Naula, who has proven to be a quality reserve for the past three years, playing averaging close to 45 minutes per game.

Key Newcomers: Head Coach Carter Lincoln and the rest of his staff hit the recruiting trails hard last year and emerged with a stellar class that includes 11 new players. Several of the first-year collegians will see the field immediately in starting and key reserve roles.
