Knights On Short End of Defensive Battle With 18th Ranked William Smith

Geneva, NY – Senior Samantha Gladd produced perhaps her best game of 2019, but the effort by the goalkeeper was not enough for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team as the Golden Knights dropped an 8-1 decision to 18th-ranked William Smith College on Friday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 5-5 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League while the Herons improved to 9-2 and 5-0. Clarkson will face another challenge on Saturday when it takes on Ithaca College.

For the past few years, games between Clarkson and William Smith have been notable for their defense by both sides as neither team has reached double figures in goals since 2015. The 2019 contest furthered that narrative as the two teams did not reach double figures combined, converting just nine times.

Neither team scored for the first 14 minutes until William Smith's Ellie Burns scored on a free-position shot at the 15:44 mark. Just 49 seconds later, Anna Murphy also tallied on a free-position shot and William Smith's third goal of the game came thanks to a Clarkson penalty when Nicki Santora scored at 6:43. The Herons finished with their first regular-play goal at the 1:42 mark in the period.

Clarkson finally got on the scoreboard at 25:28 in the second half when Aubrey Borgesi was able to beat Herons' goalkeeper Olivia Hofmann, but that would be all that the Knights could muster in the game. William Smith was quiet for more than 12 minutes of the second half, but tacked on four insurance goals in the final 18 minutes.

Gladd made six saves in the first half and six more in the second half for a total of 12, her second-highest total this year. Stephanie Scaia played well on defense with two caused turnovers and four groundballs.

For William Smith, Burns recorded three points and six groundballs while both Rachel Yackel and Bizzer Gahagan scored twice. Hofmann ended the game with four saves.

William Smith held a 24-9 edge in shots (20-5 shots on goal) and a 20-12 lead in groundballs.
