Clarkson Sweeps RIT to Tie Program Record for Wins in a Season

Potsdam, NY – A walk-off single in game one and a pitching gem in game two allowed the Clarkson University Softball team to earn a conference sweep over RIT with the Golden Knights taking the opener 5-4 in nine innings and winning the nightcap 6-1 in seven frames at Scott Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 22-12 on the season and 6-4 in the Liberty League, setting a new mark for regular-season wins and tying the program-record for wins in a season overall. The Tigers fell to 8-20 overall and dropped to 1-7 in conference games.

The opener did not appear as if it would be a close contest when the Golden Knights hung four in the bottom of the second. After a pair of ground outs, Kayla Robert reached on an error to keep the inning alive. Rylee LeBourveau then walked and Raeanna Dunn singled to load the bases. Danielle Whitham sent a single through the right side to plate a pair and Liz Caggiano doubled to right to score two more, putting Clarkson up 4-0.

That was all of the runs that the Knights would score for several more innings as RIT chipped away at the lead. The Tigers pushed two across in the third when Raquel Estrada tripled home Samm Carroll and then came home herself on an Erin Guinan single. In the fifth, Laura Weintraub doubled home Estrada to make the score 4-3, and in the seventh Estrada led off the inning with a double to center and advanced to third and home on two straight ground outs to tie the score, 4-4.

Following a scoreless eighth and an uneventful top of the ninth, the Knights pulled off the win in the bottom half of frame. Danielle Whitham drew a one-out walk, stole second and then advanced on a wild pitch. A pop up put Clarkson down to its last out before the international rules came into effect in the 10th inning, but Michele Winn drilled a pitch to left to allow Whitham score the game-winning run.

Dunn, Whitham, Caggiano and Winn each produced two hits in the game, with Whitham reaching base four times with two hits and two walks. Leah Allen picked up the win, tossing three innings of relief, allowing just one hit and one earned run in that time. For RIT, Estrada was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Olivia Doret was 3-for-5.

Game two saw freshman Olivia Zoeller come within one out of a shutout, but she still cruised through most of the contest, allowing just five hits overall. Clarkson gave its hurler a run in the second inning as Kyrstin Messier doubled with one out and came home on a ground out by Kayla Robert. What proved to be the game-winning run was scored in the bottom of the third. Raeanna Dunn reached on a bunt single and stole second and then finished her way around on a single up the middle from Michele Winn. In the fifth, Clarkson gained three insurance runs as Dunn and Whitham delivered back-to-back doubles to push the score to 3-0, and Winn homered to left to put Clarkson up 5-0. A run-scoring hit by Dunn in the sixth gave Clarkson a 6-0 edge.

The Tigers picked up an unearned run in the seventh inning, but the damage was limited as Madisen Baldwin was thrown out at third to end the game.

Dunn was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and one more driven in and Winn went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in. Maddie Brink also had two hits in game two. Zoeller struck out three and gave up five hits in seven frames for her eighth win of the season. Olivia Doret was the only RIT player to solve Zoeller's pitching as she accounted for three of the team's five hits.
