Roderick's Seven Assists Headline Clarkson's 13-9 Win Over Utica

Potsdam, NY – Freshman Sydney Roderick used pinpoint passes to find her teammates for plenty of second half goals as the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team picked up a 13-9 non-league win over Utica College on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 2-1 on the season with the victory, while Utica fell to 2-1. The Green and Gold will play their first away game of the season next Wednesday at Geneseo.

Although the offense was a little slow to start, the Golden Knights found themselves up 5-1 through 12 minutes thanks to a strong run of scoring from Katie Sergeant. The junior tallied the Knights second score at 24:23 and picked up back-to-back goals at 19:19 and 17:43 to push Clarkson's advantage to four. The third of Sergeant's goals was Clarkson's last of the half, however, as the Knights struggled to beat Utica goalkeeper Hali Vandermeulen for the remainder of the period. Utica took some advantage with two goals separated by 2:02 midway through the half, but the Pioneers were kept off the board for the final 10 minutes as well.

At the start of the second half, it was Roderick that helped jumpstart the Clarkson offense by finding her teammates in front of the net for easy shots. Her precision helpers came frequently from the back left of the goal, finding Aubrey Borgesi at 27:27 and 27:02, as well as Mia Petrone at 26:426 to quickly give the Knights an 8-3 lead out of the break. Utica stopped the run with a goal at 23:08, but Lexi Smith located Borgesi in the middle at 22:23 to begin another 3-0 run for Clarkson, pushing the margin to 11-4. Utica scored five of the final seven goals of the game, but only closed the gap to two on two different occasions.

Roderick led the team in points with seven assists while Borgesi found the back of the net for four goals. Sergeant and Jaid Baytos each scored three times while Abby Collins picked up three points on two goals an assist. Defensively, Sarah Duhaime caused three turnovers for the Knights. For Utica, Katlyn Scarpinella scored three goals and added four groundballs, four draws and two caused turnovers. Kaitlyn Palmer added three points and three draws and Wolff also recorded three points.

Clarkson ended the contest with a 37-23 edge in shots (26-17 in shots on goal) and had a modest advantage in groundballs (26-23). Samantha Gladd made eight saves in the Clarkson crease while Hali Vandermeulen stopped 13 shots.
