Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Salisbury, MD – Freshman Olivia Zoeller struck out six and allowed only five hits in seven innings to help the Clarkson University Softball team gain a split in its season-opening weekend, winning game two 2-1 against Washington College (MD) after dropping a 10-3 decision against Salisbury in game one.

The Golden Knights will play the same two teams on Sunday, with the first game beginning at 9:30 am in an attempt to beat potential rain in the afternoon.

The Golden Knights got home runs from Liz Caggiano and Michele Winn in the opening game against Salisbury, but no one was on base for either of them to lessen the impact, as the Gulls scored a number of unearned runs to gain a 10-3 victory.

In the top of the first, Caggiano pulled a pitch over the left field wall to put Clarkson up 1-0, but Salisbury responded with five runs in the bottom of the first with Emily Allen contributing a two-run double and Sami Mumford driving in two more with a single. The Gulls tacked on another run in the bottom of the second to push Salisbury's lead to 6-1 through two innings.

In the top of the third, Michele Winn doubled home Hannah Bowen to make it 6-2, but once again Salisbury picked up two unearned runs in the bottom of the third and then two more in the bottom of the fourth with run scoring hits from Amelia Trotter and Sai Mumford. Winn homered to left-center in the top of the fifth to keep Clarkson from being run-ruled, and neither team would score again.

Clarkson picked up seven hits in the first game, including three off Jillian Jones in the first three frames and four against Shannon Powell in the final four innings. The duo struck out just two combined in seven innings, but Salisbury minimized Clarkson's offense with a strong defensive effort. Raeanna Dunn and Michele Winn each recorded a pair of hits. Leah Allen took the loss, allowing seven hits and eight runs (only two earned) in three innings, and Sam Mennig tossed the final three frames, allowing two earned run on six hits with three strikeouts.

Game two saw a pitchers' duel with freshman Olivia Zoeller winning the battle. The freshman allowed just one run over seven frames, striking out six and allowing five hits on 84 pitches. Washington scored its lone run in the third inning when Grace Moery started a two-out rally with a single. Alyssa Vieira followed with a single to put runners on first and second and Rachel DiMarcello doubled down the left field line to put the Shoremen up 1-0.

Clarkson scored twice in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take the lead. Raeanna Dunn opened the inning with a single and then advanced to second on an error when Danielle Whitham reached on a sacrifice bunt. Hannah Bowen pushed the runners up one base with a ground out to the right side and Winn drove in both with one-out hit to put Clarkson up 2-1.

The Knights would not need their final at bat as Zoeller retired the Shoremen in order in the seventh, inducing three infield ground outs to end the game.

Clarkson recorded just four hits in game two, with Dunn going 2-for-3. The top three hitters combined for all five hits for the Shoremen, as Vieira and DiMarcello each went 2-for-3. Rachel Butler was the hard luck loser for Washington, allowing just four hits in six innings with five strikeouts and just a single earned run.
