Potsdam, NY – A strong first half resulted in a three-goal lead as the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team picked up a 4-2 Liberty League win over Union College on Senior Day at Hantz Field.

With the win, and combined with other results in the Liberty League, the Golden Knights finished in fourth place in the conference, though only overtime heroics by Hobart and Vassar kept the Knights from a first-round bye. Clarkson will face Ithaca College on Tuesday in a Liberty League First Round playoff contest.

Clarkson improved to 10-4-3 overall and 5-1-3 in the Liberty League, while Union dropped to 10-7 overall and 2-7 in conference games.

With the chance of being on the road for the first round still a possibility, the Golden Knights came out strong in the first half and found the back of the net three times. The first goal of the game came with an unassuming start as the ball was played back to Kyle Jackson in the Clarkson defensive zone. The freshman dribbled forward and the ball eventually found the feet of Henry Gomez. Jackson kept on his run and Gomez found him in the open about 15 yards out where he played a ball on the bounce near his hip, rifling in a high shot with his right foot at 17:47.

The second goal of the game came nearly 20 minutes later as Union was putting pressure on the Knights. However, Clarkson quickly reversed field and played the ball deep into Dutchmen territory. A pass back to Mack Walton began the play and Walton sent a slow pass to Erick Naula at the top of the box, and the senior hit a hard grounder to the far post at 36:39 to put Clarkson up 2-0. Just three minutes later the Knights tallied again when Bobby Guilfoil was taken down in the box just a few yards away from the goalkeeper. Matt Adamou took the ensuing penalty kick and converted at 39:22 for a 3-0 Clarkson lead.

The Knights added an insurance goal at the start of the second period as Stephen Klimek followed up Henry Gomez's attempt at the 46:29 mark to make it 4-0. Union kept things alive, but missed on some chances later. A penalty kick at the 76:50 mark had Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs guessing wrong, but the ball missed the frame all together to keep things scoreless. That would change in the 86th minute as Union scored twice. A short corner provided Yasin Dombayci with some breathing room near the close corner of the penalty area and he curled a shot in at 85:16 to put the Dutchmen on the board. Just 28 seconds later, the ball was deflected on a header by a Clarkson defender and Jeremy Conn volleyed the ball out of the air at 85:44 to make it a 4-2 game. However, the Dutchmen recorded just one more shot the rest of the way and came up short in the long-chance comeback.

Union finished with a 19-12 edge in shots and a 9-6 lead in shots on goal while also edging Clarkson in corners at 4-3. Ian Roeloffs denied seven shots to pick up the win for Clarkson and Trevor Krupp made three saves for the Dutchmen.
