Vassar Halts Clarkson Unbeaten League Streak, 3-1

Poughkeepsie, NY – For the first time in close to a month, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team allowed a goal as the Golden Knights suffered their first Liberty League loss of the season, dropping a 3-1 decision to Vassar College Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 8-4-2 overall and 4-1-2 in the conference, while Vassar pushed to 7-6-1 overall and 4-2-0 in league games. Clarkson will be at home next weekend when the team faces Rensselaer.

The Brewers got on the board midway through the first half after a throw in at the 23rd minute. Hawkins Barratt Heitmann headed the ball in front of the net and Henrik Olsson was in the right place at the right time, heading a shot in rom three yards out for the score. Clarkson nearly answered soon after when Stephen Klimek intercepted a pass and went one-on-one with goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski, but Wnorowski grabbed Klimek's shot right up the middle to keep Clarkson scoreless.

The Brewers scored again at the 61 minute mark when Ryan Lane ran to the right side of the field and launched the open attempt from 20-yards out into the left back corner of net. Vassar continued to build its lead two minutes later when Andrew Goldsmith shot from the outside right corner. Quinn Tunnell was waiting on the left post and helped the ball find its way home to put the Brewers up 3-0.

Clarkson managed to prevent a shutout after a free kick attempt at 83:37. The Golden Knights' Bobby Guilfoil lined up at the top middle of the box and slipped the shot into the right corner of net.

Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs recorded five saves, matching the effort of Wnorowski. Each team had 13 shots, with Vassar leading in shots on goal at 8-6.
