Adamou's Early Goal Holds Up in Clarkson's 1-0 Win Over 8th-Ranked Ithaca

Potsdam, NY – Senior goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs came up big once again for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team as he made sure an early goal held up in a 1-0 Liberty League win over eighth-ranked Ithaca College Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights remain unbeaten in conference games, improving to 3-0-2 in the Liberty League and 7-3-2 overall. Ithaca dropped to 10-2-1 on the season and 3-1-0 in conference games. With the win, Clarkson took over first place in the Liberty League with 11 points, although two of the teams occupying the top four have played one fewer game than the Knights. Clarkson will be back in action next week as the team hits the road for its final two away games of the season at Bard College and Vassar College.

Roeloffs denied six shots in the Knights' shutout win, his fourth straight whitewash. Clarkson's defense has not allowed a goal in the last 483 minutes, 55 seconds of game time.

Clarkson got off to its fastest start of the season scoring just 2:12 into the game. After the Bombers knocked the ball out of bounds at the goal line, the Knights were set up for their first corner kick of the match. Matt Adamou struck the ball with his left foot and watched the ball bend all the way to the far post, knocking off the side of the pillar and in to give Clarkson an early 1-0 lead. That was the extent of Clarkson's shots on goal for the remainder of the half, however, as Ithaca went into the locker room with a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. Clarkson held a 3-1 lead in corner kick chances, making the most of one of its opportunities.

Sensing its undefeated conference record was in serious danger, Ithaca picked up the pace in the second half and outshot the Golden Knights 4-1 in the second half. In the 55th minute, the Bombers were fouled deep in the Clarkson end and Tom Dillman was given a direct kick just outside the box, but had to shoot around the Clarkson's wall. Dillman decided to go over the top of the wall but the 6-4 Roeloffs had plenty of reach to knock the ball over the crossbar and out of play. A little over 10 minutes later, Ithaca was granted another free kick near the Clarkson net. This time, Dillman fired the direct kick low and outside to the right, but again was stopped by the sprawling Roeloffs. For the most part, the Golden Knight defense kept the ball out of harm's way the rest of the half to secure the win.

Ithaca finished with the edge in shots (9-5) and shots on goal (6-3) while Clarkson had the advantage in corner kicks (4-2). Ian Roeloffs made six saves for his fourth straight shutout while Max Lichtenstein stopped two shots for Ithaca.
