Knights Drop 2-0 Decision at St. Lawrence

Canton, NY – A first half own goal and a second half score by St. Lawrence kept the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team winless in conference games as the Golden Knights suffered a 2-0 defeat on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights fell to 6-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence moved to 5-1-1 and 2-0-0. Clarkson will be back on its home turf this weekend when it hosts RIT in search of its first conference victory.

The Golden Knights limited St. Lawrence to just a few runs and some off target shots in the first 35 minutes, but it was the Saints that struck first late in the opening half. After a defender slipped, the Saints were able to put a cross in the box near the six, and the Knights made an attempt to clear the ball on a volley, but the ball ended up just inside the post instead of wide and high of the net, putting St. Lawrence up 1-0 at 8:43.

Clarkson's offense countered throughout the first half and immediately put pressure on the Saints defense in the second half as well. The two best chances for the Knights came midway through the half. Drew Lewis slipped past a couple of defenders, but fell near the 18-yard line. Staying with the play, he wrestled the ball back, got up and took a hard high shot that was just high of the crossbar in the 64th minute. Two minutes later, Henry Gomez also just missed his target high as the Knights appeared ready to tie the game up with momentum on their side.

However, it was St. Lawrence that would score for a second time and keep the Knights at a safe distance. The Saints patiently moved the ball around, mostly in their own defensive end, for close to 90 seconds before taking advantage of an aggressive Clarkson defense. After numerous passes near the midfield, Jethro Dede saw an opportunity and passed a through ball into the box. Brendan McNamee read the pass and slid in behind the Clarkson defense for a one-on-one with the Golden Knights' goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs, and McNamee beat Roeloffs with a shot to the far post at 67:24.

Clarkson and St. Lawrence finished the game tied at 12-12 in shots, and the Saints came up with a small advantage in shots on goal of 6-4, most of which came in the final 25 minutes of the game. Clarkson held a small advantage in corner kick chances (7-5). Roeloffs finished with four saves and Mike Smith made four stops for St. Lawrence.
