Clarkson Drops First of 2018, 2-0 to Plattsburgh State

Potsdam, NY - The season opening six-game home stand for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team finally came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as did the Golden Knights five-game winning streak as the Green and Gold suffered their first loss of the campaign, dropping a 2-0 decision to Plattsburgh State at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights, ranked 24th in the latest d3soccer.com poll, fell to 5-1-0 on the season and will look to bounce back when they visit SUNY Canton on Wednesday evening. Plattsburgh moved to 2-3-2 on the year.

Clarkson found itself in the hole almost immediately as the Cardinals jumped off to a strong start by scoring in the first minute of the contest. Right off the opening kickoff, Plattsburgh carried the ball into the Clarkson defensive zone, and some miscommunication allowed Plattsburgh to get a one-on-one against Clarkson goalkeeper Ian Roeloffs. Taka Fukushima took full advantage of the opportunity, scoring just 19 ticks into the game to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.

The two teams played essentially even for the remainder of the contest, finishing the game tied in shots (13-13), though Clarkson had a modest lead in shots on goal (6-4). Plattsburgh added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute, however, to squash any hopes of a Clarkson comeback. At the 81:35 mark, Chris Robertson possessed the ball on the right side of the field and sent a hard grounder all the way across the goal and it just snuck inside the far post to put Plattsburgh up 2-0.

Ryan Wilson finished with six saves to record the shutout for the Cardinals, while Ian Roeloffs denied two shots in the Clarkson frame.
