Quiet Second Half Sends Knights to Loss at RIT, 10-8

Rochester, NY – A stale second half with just one goal sunk the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon as RIT came from behind at the half to gain a 10-8 Liberty League win over the Golden Knights.

The Green and Gold fell to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in league games, while RIT evened its overall mark at 7-7 and moved to 5-4 in the Liberty League. Clarkson hits the road for games against Skidmore and Union next weekend and then faces University of Rochester on April 28.

Clarkson scored the first three goals of the game in the opening nine minutes, keeping the high-scoring RIT offense silent until Alanna Fallone scored at 19:18. That goal hardly sparked the Tigers as both Aubrey Borgesi and Emma Andrews scored midway through the first half to extend the Clarkson lead to 5-1. Emily Livecchi scored back-to-back goals in the final seven-plus minutes but Abby Collins and Jaid Baytos each found the back of the net to keep the Knights lead at four goals, 7-3. With 11 seconds left, Maegan Schmauder scored for RIT to reduce the margin to three goals at the half, a seemingly harmless score and hardly a momentum shifter.

More than anything, RIT's key was a change of goalkeepers at the break. Paulina Goodermote made six saves on 13 shots in the first half, but her replacement Rebekah Snitkoff enjoyed her best performance of the season by far, allowing only one goal and making seven saves in the second half. Clarkson played even with the Tigers in the final 30 minutes, trailing in shots by one (14-13), groundballs by one (13-12) and going 12-for-12 on clears, but the Knights simply could not beat Snitkoff until late. RIT slowly chipped away at Clarkson's lead in the first few minutes of the second half and took the lead at 12:32 on a Maddie Dillabaugh goal. Two more scores put RIT up 10-7, and although Jaid Baytos scored with 3:13 remaining to finally end the Knights' scoreless streak, Clarkson could put just one more shot on goal in the final three minutes and suffered their third loss in conference games.

Katie Sergeant, Emma Andrews and Baytos each scored two goals and Abby Collins added two points with one goal and one assist, while also adding in four groundballs, three caused turnovers and three draws. Sergeant also chipped in three groundballs and four draw controls. Samantha Gladd made 10 saves in the Clarkson crease, picking up five groundballs along the way.

For RIT, Emily Livecchi scored six points on three goals and three assists. Colette Rigas gained six draw controls and Savannah Clemens led the team with four groundballs.
