Shea Picked as CoSIDA Academic All-American Second-Team Member

For four seasons Madison Shea excelled on both the basketball court and in the classroom, and on Wednesday she was rewarded for all of her hard work with a selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-American Second-Team, becoming just the second Clarkson University Women's Basketball player to receive honors at the national level.

Only 15 student-athletes across all of Division III were named to the three CoSIDA Academic All-American teams. Due to a tie in voting, six players earned first team status, four gained second team honors, and five players were picked to the third team.

Shea is one of 11 former Golden Knight student-athletes from the women's basketball team to earn CoSIDA All-District honors, but she and Stephanie Sealer are the only two to gain national recognition. Sealer also earned second-team honors following the 1994-95 season.

More impressively, Shea's selection to the CoSIDA Academic All-American National team marks the 10th straight year that Clarkson University has seen at least one of its student-athletes gain the highest academic honor. Shea Tiley (2016-17), Christine Wright (2014-15, 2015-16), John Coleman (2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15), Vanessa Gagnon (2013-14), Christian Perryman (2013-14), Erika Chin (2012-13), Sara Artus (2011-2), David Goerold (2009-10, 2010-11), and Kristen Larsen (2008-09) accounted for 15 other selections in the previous nine years.

Clarkson All-Time CoSIDA Selections

With a flawless 4.00 grade-point average in Engineering and Management, Shea has always been an easy choice for academic honors, but her outstanding playing career pushed her over the top for student-athlete awards. Shea started all 106 games in the past four years, setting a new standard for Golden Knights' basketball for most games played. She also finished 10th all-time in scoring (963 points), 15th in rebounding (510), fifth in assists (344), third in steals (241), 12th in both field goals made (352) and free throws made (210) and 13th in 3-point field goals made (49).

This past season, Shea ranked 14th in the Liberty League in scoring (11.2 ppg), 13th in rebounding (5.8 rpg), third in assists (3.5 apg), third in steals (2.0 spg) and fifth in minutes (33.6 mpg).
